This is what I'm doing as well. Don't need a winch 99% of the time, just extra weight. Plus can pull either direction, and can store in the garage when I don't need it. Win/win.
That was my exact thinking. Can just throw the winch into the tub when going off-roading - ready there if needed. Permanently installing the wiring in though using Anderson plugs.
