That's awesome! There is so much to get to know regardless of the jeep you decide on...I have heard of a 4.7 conversion on the XJ but think the supercharged version might be better, but I'm not sure.

If you're doing anything other than a stock motor in a XJ, there is no way it should be anything but a GM truck 4.8, 5.3 or 6.0 (all AL preferably).

But, but, but...

Diesel!!

I want either an older, mechanical Benz or one of those new Cummins 2.8 conversions. I think the Benz is what I most want, but it is probably also the more difficult conversion.

The extended range of a diesel conversion is what I want most of all.

yes, the Achilles heel for an XJ is the range you can drive IMO...I have looked at auxiliary fuel tanks to fix that. The new Cummins 2.8 is pretty great crate motor...A bit more expensive than I want to pay for though for now.

I'll have to see what those are about...I was born in Sudbury, Ont and lived for many years near Chatham which is close to Windsor. I have a son who has autism and Down Syndrome. How do you find travelling with your boy on off road trips? Any advice I should consider?

I would look at truetracs. No complexity of air lines and compressors, and if your not hardcore crawling they will get you where you need to go. I'm putting them in our jku.
Those are on my shortlist. When I rebuild the diffs I'm going to put a TruTrac i the rear at least, possibly on both ends.

Also if I'm doing a diesel conversion my two options would be VW swap (jetta or bug) or R2.8. R2.8 if I could afford it VW if I was on a budget.

Awesome. Check out our website and follow us on facebook to keep up to date with our Adeventures. With your boy, you need to know how he travels on road, and make him comfortable. Little man loves his jeeps and loves going up in the woods wherever we go. So, that's a positive. Take whatever you need to make him happy. For Colin, it's his blankie one and ipad. Everything else is secondary.

Oh, and the truetracs are automatic limited slip lockers. They open up when turning etc. but lock you in really good when you NEED it. They are not as aggressive as a true locker, but MUCH better than a factory limited slip option. Pretty well the best overlanding vehicle option for a daily driver.
