Hello, I just became a member of this group earlier today after researching future plans with my new Jeep. I've been over-landing for several years but basically always went solo.

My cousin and I have been talking about a big camping trip, and we decided to focus on Baja California during my spring break as a college English instructor. We might have to travel alone, but I'm curious to see if there might be any group outings happening during that time. Having a convey going through Mexico might be a better way to do it than rolling down in one vehicle. I'm just getting started here but am wondering if I should try to get something together.

Also, do any of you have any suggestions for a good guidebook that covers Baja California? We will camp most of the time but might do a night or two in a hotel.

Thanks,

Beau

@Cendee, aren't some of your crew planning something like this?
I have so many other things going on right now I really havent put much thought into. I want to do this trip but need to see what time off work allows after the other trips.

There are not many book on Exploring and camping in Baja. Most are 15 or more years old. What else are you looking to do hike, surf, chill, drive? I spend a fair amount of time there.

There are companies which lead trips. You can find them via Google Search, etc. Using them is pricey but also takes the planning requirements out and make it for an easy trip. There are lots of resources online. Here on OB and elsewhere where folks have described their trips. Expedition Portal is another good resource. Everyone has to chose their level of comfort. My first trip I went with a group of fellow overlanders. I have had many friends go solo and had a great time.

If you can't find people to go during your dates I would not prevent that from you going on the trip. Everyone down in Baja is nice. Travel is slow, don't drive at night, be humble, and you will have a great time.

Utahlasvegas I believe this is you first trip to Baja. Here are some ideas.
Cross at Mexicali and head south to somewhere around Defines to Punta Final/
Bahia San Francisquito. Plenty of camping on the beach. Some improved, some not. Head to Coco's Corner and sign the book and buy a drink. (He will not e around forever) Continue to Bahia de Los Angeles, cool spot plenty of fishing here too. Bahia De Las Animas is a short drive and very pretty. From here, going south is pretty removed from most of the world, top off gas in BdLA. The roads south from here to El Arco and Hwy 1 are good for the most part, rains can change things. Beaches at Boca Grande, San Rafael, San Francisquito, El Barril are all worth seeing, pick a couple.
In a pinch ask around for gas, you'll be able find some, El Arco has 55 gal cans. Go north to Guerrero Negro. (Big town). North to the Turn off to Santa Rosalillita (Gas from cans) check out the sanded harbor and go north along the coast. Very remote, there might still be surfers at some points. The road is gradedish to about Punta Maria. Above there it is far more remote and poor roads, there is moon dust in here too. There are plenty of roads to get back to the highway, some good some not. you will not be wheeling but you will be in 4X4 mode on some of these roads. From the highway go south back to Chapala and home the same way you came down or go north. Highway one to Valle Liano Colorado ( just north of El Cardonal) and take the road to Colonia Lazaro Cardenas. on Hwy 3. cross back at Mexicali.
This is a rough outline with plenty of remote camping and cool beaches. You can break it up and do what you want. There are petroglyphs and old missions if you want. If you see a boat coming ashore in the middle of the night, do not go see what is going on. Don't drive at night. Keep your speed down. Stop and walk the beaches. Alway eat at the busy places.
