How many still overland camp in the snow?

Hello Overland Bound adventure's!
Before I got sick, some of my favorite time out camping was snow camping in the winter! With the right gear, I always enjoyed not having the crowds out, most of the time had the camping all to my self. Snowshoeing or cross country skiing in was a lot of fun building a snow cave was great also. Maybe, some of why I liked mountain climbing so much! But even now car camping in the snow is great fun. And no bugs, still have to watch out for snow snakes though! Haha. Let's hear from some more snow camping crazies! Or am I the only one? Benz.

Boy that sound familiar. I grew up high in the mountains of Colorado on a ranch with 1000 head of cattle. I was on ski patrol and taught. I did a ton of mountain climbing and winter survival and rescue. I loved snowshoeing but after 16 orth surgeries and getting old, that is limited. I built a teardrop for year round comfort. I am installing a gasoline fired furnace so I can just set the thermostat and have a nice warm 72F for sleeping. I love doing winter photography in the high mountains. My wife is a city girl, so winter is not her favorite, and I have to do all I can to keep her warm and happy.

There is something about the crystal clear air up in the mountains! The cold really hurts all my joints and keeps me from enjoying it like I used to. To celebrate my graduation from college, a friend and I hitchhiked from Walla Walla, Wa. Down to Mt. Rainier spent a week climbing it, then I hitchedhike down to the coast then back to Walla Walla! Fun times! I am a Yeti Mountaineer also. Did a lot of climbing in the Bitteroot Mountains too. Snow, and natural hot springs! Good memories! Benz.

It’s been a while since I’ve intentionally headed out in the snow, but I certainly don’t mind it. And I definitely prefer winter camping to summer camping in the desert. That said, it’s not unusual to run into snow in the higher elevations around here from October through March.

We are getting snow today here in Chelan. I am warm as a bug in a wool rug, in my motor home! Benz.

I wish I still enjoyed snow camping but as I get older the less it appeals to me. Also most of the trails in the Sierra Foothills of El Dorado and Placer county CA are closed in winter making it an easier decision not to go.

I do. I don’t mind the snow in the slightest... until I have to shovel it. Then it gets old in a hurry. [emoji57]

I Love the clean crisp snow in the mountains and like camping late into the fall or early spring. Until about -10°C it’s good. After that it gets a tad on the chilly side. [emoji846]

I used to go annually for my birthday. Maybe that will be a goal for January. Just need to rebuild the front axle, regear/lock both, some drawers and remount my RTT. Should be doable by the end of January

I love being in the woods in winter! No crowds ever and no dusty trails.

Snow is not my best terrain though

Never have minded camping in the snow with the right equipment. My youngest goes snowshoe camping with just a backpack. The issue I have around here is all the best high country pass roads are closed off in the winter, not to mention a big reason I offroad is for the fishing which is froze over in the winter. I fly fish.

There is something about being out in nature in the winter time. Winter has it's own beauty! I am blessed to live and have access to the winter wonderland here in the middle of Washington state. Even with the cold temps there is Steelhead fly fishing, and many roads to play on. Again as already said, having the right equipment and gear makes a big difference. Benz.

I'll never forget being out with my dad in -60F feeding the cattle with a team of horses and a sled. You can't start equipment that cold, so even today they still feed with a team of horses and a sled. We used to chop a hole in the river for the cattle to drink. It was not uncommon for the ice to be 24" thick. I remember spitting tobacco and hearing it crackle as it froze on the way to the ground. When it is that cold, a cow will eat almost a whole bale of hay a day. That means you ended up feeding a thousand bales of hay a day. You got a workout.

Few people will ever have the blessing to experience life at it's most simple terms.

Hate to admit it....nope. The cold hurts me now. I miss winter camping. Living here in Canada, we get a lot of snow and it seems to get colder every year (we keep remaking cold records) and more unpredictable and damp. So instead of going out in the Jeep or now the Taco....we take out our Argo 8x8 with tracks. It gets loaded down with tent, packs, food, water, stove, snow shoes for a day out and sometimes a night. Much more doeable in deep snow for us. We don’t have to worry about crowds where we live. You have to drive an hour to even see a gathering of people or crowd.
I really envy you guys and gals that live in the southern states. I really enjoy overlanding vicariously through your posts in the winter months because right now we can’t. Who knows once I’m discharged we may end up overlanding over the winter down southern USA and Baja.
