How long in advance to contact people?

I am doing a 4000 mile trip and I want to contact some people where I can stay along the way but I dont know whats right as far as how much advance notice to contact them 2 months 6 months a year maybe some here can give me some advice on what would be proper..

We are planning a trip to MT in July with a stop in the black hills. Had a member reach out and talk to us about the black hills. Chatted a bit. Left it open for discussing later about meeting up.

I would say, once you have your basic rout planned, reach out and just say hey, by the way, I'm going to be in your neck of the woods around this time.

I wouldn't go past 6 months out, people tend to forget with that much notice
