Hey all, new to this forum!
I'm gonna be building my own bed rack for my 08 Canyon over the next couple weeks, and I figured this is the right place to share and get feedback. I just ordered the steel tubing from Midwest Steel and Aluminum. here's a picture of the model i made for it. I'm building it myself so I can put a rooftop tent on it, and buying a bed rack is super expensive! I'm also trying to find a used tent, so LMK if youre selling in the midwest or Mississippi area! :)

the main bars are gonna be 4"x2" 14ga rectangular steel tubing, with the longitudinal connecting bars being some angle iron I can find around the farm. This fall, I plan on cutting some slotted plate aluminum to add on the sides to mount things like a jack and traction boards. For the mounting, I plan on welding a 3/4" bolt through a 2"x4" plate, then welding that onto the bottom of each leg of the rack. Then, i will drill a 3/4" hole through the top of my bedside and drop the rack's studs right in those. Lockwasher, nut, done. Yes, i know drilling holes in your pickup is SCARY, but the top of the bedsides are already LINEX, and with this method I will be able to keep and use my roll-up tonneau cover. I'm also trying to decide If i want to get the rack powdercoated, or do a DIY bedliner spray.

Steel should be here by the end of the week, and ill keep yall updated!

Check out Hot Metal Fab. They make affordable bed racks. I bought one for my off road trailer to hold a hardshell rooftop tent.20200815_191959_HDR.jpg

What’s your progress? Got any designs mocked up yet?

I guess I never got around to updating this thread. Last spring (almost a year ago now) I rented a welder from Home Depot and put this thing together. Here’s what it looks like. it’s been great and I love it. I mounted my traction boards on it and even got a tent. Best part is that I can still use my tonneau cover. I would love to put a Molle panel or something like that on the sides of the rack to mount more stuff. But I can’t find any universal sheets of the stuff, and the Cali-raised side-rack panels are like $120 a pop. I’ve thought about using L-track or E-track but I’m not a huge fan of either. Any ideas?

Molle panels are good for things not in the wind stream, like tucked under the cover. Things you might want to mount would be Rotopax or camp area lights. I purchased rock lights off Amazon for like $20 for 4. I screwed mine onto my rack and it lights up the area around my truck nicely. Great thing is since they are LED you don’t need a relay and a standard switch works great.
Rack looks really good, great job
