I’m Owen, I’ve been a member of OB for several years (member #0566) but haven’t been active much until I recently acquired a more capable rig (upgraded from a Jeep Patriot to a Jeep Commander). I live in bassett VA, a little south of Roanoke, with my wife Allison, our 5 month old daughter Imogen, and our husky Shiloh.

My rig is a 2007 Jeep Commander Overland edition with a 5.7L V8 HEMI and the QDII off road system. I’m currently working on fabbing a custom full length roof rack for it. I have a 2” rough country lift and 265/70R17 Toyo AT2 tires getting put on next week.

I’ve started doing some light trails around the Roanoke area, but would love to meet up with anyone from the area who knows some good spots!

Owen, my name is Brian Naby. I just joined and live in Roanoke. I was thinking about your roof rack build. I'm not to sure how far along you are or your plans but I had a thought about using a metal futon frame... back and seat as a platform. I am going with a prebuilt one for my jk but I still have the futon. I can get you measurement this weekend.

That’s an interesting thought. I love the idea of repurposing items for different uses in Overlanding, especially since it’s usually a huge cost savings. I actually have all my build materials for this current build, but if you ever get around to making that rack let me know how it turns out!

Side note! What trails have you run in Roanoke? I haven't done much but Broad Run is easy and fun. It has about 8 or 9 water crossings.
