I'm new to OB and new to the forum. Glad to finally be a member. I've been planning on joining for a while but was waiting till I was able to get a "real" overland rig. I've decided to quit waiting and join as-is. My wife and I love the outdoors and we do a fair amount of long distance hiking. We also do some RV camping with our diesel 4wd and toy hauler but now that our kids are grown, we want to get out with less fuss. As such, we're currently shopping for a rig that we can get setup. Our hope is to have a new ride in the driveway in the next 30 days. I hope to be able to start getting involved in local events and training. I am heavily involved in Ham Radio and would love to help any one in the area who needs help getting setup or who has any questions.

Thanks!
Aaron

Hello @Aaron Lee and welcome to Overland Bound. I am glad you didn't delay any longer. All that is required to be part of the community is a desire for adventure. I will be very curious to see what you and your wife decide on for your new overland rig.

It might be short notice, but we are having a meetup this evening at the Famous Dave's Bar-B-Que - Cascade Point in Portland [link]. Even if you can't make tonight's meetup, I suggest keeping an eye on the Northwest Region forum [link], as that is where we do the planning for events and it is a great place to get to know your neighbors as well. You might also be interested in the weekly amateur radio net held each Friday via Echolink [link].

Of course, once an event gets planned, it will be added to the Rally Point system [link], so you might want to watch that as well.

I look forward to meeting you in person. Until then, if you need anything, feel free to message me on the forums @Jedi.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I will definitely be sharing some pictures of our adventure rig once we get it. I'm also toying with the idea of converting a small cargo trailer or building my own. For now, I'm reading and formulating plans... For me, that's half the fun.

Much more to follow.

Thanks,
Aaron

Welcome to the forum from West Texas. Good look with the vehicle search and I look forward to Ham discussions as I intend to take my test in the next month or so.

So I'm curious about something. I'm confused about how the tags and banners work on the forum. When I signed up for the forum, I added my OB number but I'm still not seeing "member" on my profile even though I do see my member number listed. Not sure if I just haven't set something up right on my profile or not.

Thanks,
Aaron

Well, I guess I've been doing it without a "real" vehicle for a while! :tearsofjoy: My wife and I just completed a trip from Hillsboro to Quartzsite, AZ for the Quartzfest ham radio convention in our 2006 Ford F250 (6.0) and had a blast. There were a couple of off-road trips we participated in and one group was really concerned that the truck wouldn't work, but I definitely proved them wrong! :tonguewink:

I realized recently that I was hung up on what I "thought" made a "real" overlanding rig but after seeing a few videos from Michael about the subject and realized I needed to reset my definition. That's when I finally joined. I realized our family had been doing overland type adventures for years. Some with the truck and travel trailer, some with just a truck, some with the motorcycle's I've owned over the years. That said, I can't wait to get a more purpose-built vehicle for exploring some rougher terrain than my 1 ton diesel will allow. Hope to see you on one of the runs soon Chris!
