Hey y'all,
I am from Georgia, but currently live on long island. Not new to off roading or camping, but I am to overlanding. Anyway nice to meet y'all and I hope I can find some good places to take my family around upstate New York. If anyone knows of anywhere good let me know!

I used to live on long island... grew up there and spent basically all my life there. I lived in West Islip/Babylon area mostly. Not sure if you have considered it yet, but the beaches provide some nice places to do some camping. You will need to equip yourself with a fishing pole, your truck will have to meet the specs, and i think you need to have a toilet (most have a bucket with a toilet seat) with you. But yea, if you have the right setup it can be a great place. I know the north shore also has some places where the rules are not as restrictive but as I was not from that area, im not sure about the rules or where to go. Might be worth looking into it though. Also, out east I know there are some worth while outdoor adventures where I know you can camp on the beach.

Hey, thanks for the advice. I have driven out to Smith's point and Montauk already but I haven't done any camping out here yet. I think I might try Democratic point this spring, I hear that's a nice place. I wanted to go upstate becuase it kinda reminds me of home in the Georgia mountains lol.

Demo is the place i was recommending. Its off Robert Moses State Park. Its pretty epic. I surfed there a lot when i was young. Its a great spot. Right on the inlet. Beautiful at night.

Make sure you find out what is required from the rangers. There is a ranger station on robert moses. They can help inform you. Just make sure it looks like your primary intention is to go fishing. They are crazy strict.

Yea, like I said, im not sure what the rules are these days. Best bet is to take a short day trip out there, visit the park rangers station and talk with someone who knows the gig. I just would hate to see you get a ticket. Also, when you drive up to the trailhead there are a list of rules. Adhear to them and you should be good to go. Dont, at your peril. =)

Wish I could join you or lived in the area still. I could have taken you and your family out on my sailboat. Had a 25' C&C and explored all over the great south bay. I miss that boat. Looking at maps and pictures of the area just made me homesick. Had so much fun growing up on the Great South Bay. So many adventures, so many good times, so miss it.
