I'm curious what would be a good app for trails on the iPad. I found leadnav and I'm wondering if anyone has used it and what their thoughts were about it. Thanks

I've been using Gaia GPS with my iPad Mini mounted in a Ram Mount for all my navigation needs off road. What I particularly like about this app is the web interface. https://www.gaiagps.com/ - You can view all your tracks, routes and pins online, you can plan routes and trips and then sync them to your device. Works on Android also, FYI.

You can also share your tracks with others, easily: https://www.gaiagps.com/public/IYKry4lHB3ApzfZxbA2IOIAd <- Here is my track for doing Gold Bar Rim in Moab.

Boom, easy.

The interface is really nice and easy to use. A small learning curve, but once you dig in, I don't think anything else on the market comes close right now.

I forgot to mention, they offer a lot of map layers, so you can load USGS top maps, NFS maps, NatGeo National Parks maps, and dozens of various map styles. All which have been helpful in my own explorations. As I've found some map layers have more details missing from other layers. Here in Idaho, there are a lot of Jeep trails that show up on the USGS topo map only. I've had the chance to drive a few, and they're still there.

I am biased, I work for Gaia GPS now, but I will say Gaia GPS is the best app out there. Look for the thread Ask Me About Gaia GPS if you try the app and have questions.

Gaia also, but get a premium plus or whatever membership.. the map layers make it great.

I use a 12.9" Ipad (the largest one) and a Dual GPS160 for bluetooth gps, and a verizon mifi for connectivity when im on grid.

Ram mount to passenger seat bolt and I found the specific ram mount for my ipad to be cheaper than the generic large sized typical rubber 'arms' type mount that I see a lot. It even has a spot for the apple pencil.

I second this.

I fumbled with a few different ones but this one has been the best all around for me.

I too love the web interface. Planning and routing is super easy and saving it for access later on your device is super handy.

Pre-trip, I'll download all the areas I think I'll be in (like for the maps data) so they're ready to go if and when I don't have service.

And I'll record while I'm on trail for access and recollection post trip (and those recorded routes can be shared).

You probably know this, but I didn't when I was getting started out - iPhones and cellular iPads have GPS receivers in them. So as long as you have the maps data downloaded while you have internet, you can use it all off grid.

I use an iPad pro on a ram mount with the balls hard mounted to the center and it's quite awesome to navigate from.

I run a little different than most, I explore from the desk on Google Earth and build routes. I then import these files to the Maps.me App on my WiFi only iPad that is tethered to a DualElectronics GPX150 Bluetooth Sat Receiver.
Very happy with the way I use it. Been this way for about three years now.

I understand why others use the paid versions of nice Apps, but as mentioned, I approach it a little differently.

I use Gaia as my main app, and also have Topo Maps loaded. Besides the iPad I also carry a Garmin Legend HCx handheld as backup and while out of the vehicle. Oh, I also carry a Delorme Topo Gazette. One is none, two is one. Etc.
