Headed to Gold Lake, CA for some camping. Will make camp on 1/18 and break camp on 1/20. There's a nearby Snake Lake trail run for high lift 4WD vehicles. If you want to join us, here's the info:

It'll be cold. Weather forecast is possible light snow. Pack and gear up accordingly. Any stock aggressive 4WD can make it in (4Runner TRD, Jeep Rubicon, etc.).

No running water, so bring water or boil lake water. Pack out human waste (pit toilets decommisioned). Bring firewood, since rain/snow might eliminate dry deadfall.

If interested in linking up, send me a PM or reply here.

Looks like a great trip. Would love to give winter camping a try, and I have been wanting to go to this area a go too but I am swamped that weekend. Have fun.

Good point. Except I can’t get out of work Thursday and Friday so if my weekend was free I would have been a go up Saturday and come back Sunday. Hope to do another time.

If you plan to go again this year, give a shout. I’d like get back in there.
I never went, due to a blizzard that weekend. I went down south instead. Right now the lake is frozen solid and the road is snowed over. I think next July will be doable, but we'll still have to break through snow.

Gold Lake should be totally doable by July.

The straight forward way to the 4x4 campground is by the 4x4 trail from the regular Gold Lake campground at the other side of the lake. Last fall we took the back route from Packer Lake via Deer Lake. Its bumpier in some places but it sure was a good time.

I have these two web cams bookmarked to check current conditions in Bassetts Station and Graeagle (both of which are at a bit lower elevation than the Lakes Basin Recreational Area:
