Let me prefise this question by tell you that I'm a long time ham radio guy that mostly uses Motorola commercial equipment. I'm planning to install a convert-a-comm in my Jeep with an XTS5000 portable radio that, in addition to a bunch of ham stuff, is also programmed for the GMRS frequencies. Since this radio is programmed with a computer I can't easily change the PL or "Privacy" tones once done. So my question, when running with a group do most of you use a privacy tone at all or do you leave the channel open so you can hear everyone? I'm hoping that's the case because it would make my life a lot easier. If most of you are using privacy tones then I'll probably have to think of something else.

Thanks,

B

With the limited use I've had with my GMRS, in my area there is little use on any of the channels. I don't see a lot of need for privacy tones. When I do hear someone it's because I put on "scan" and might pick someone up. Most all the time its someone with cheap handhelds and in a few minutes they are out of range.

That’s actually good. It means I could program in the GMRS channels with no tones and would likely still be okay. Thanks for the reply!

I use no privacy tones, so I can use a handheld that doesn’t support them for spotting/being spotted.

Thanks for the reply. It sounds like most don’t use them. I’m in the same boat, using a Motorola that can’t easily be changed. I’ll just program it for carrier squelch and hope for the best. I can always carry my programmable portable in case I need it.
