After reading so many incredible build threads on here I have been hesitant to start one since our 2007 JKU is mostly stock at this point and it is going to be a real slow build. That said, I figure if anything this would help me keep track of all the work I do on it, and if anyone else finds it interesting all the better. So let me catch you up.

I have always loved Jeeps but my lifestyle/work never really allowed for one until they came out with the JKU, so after checking them out for a few months I decided to get a 2008 JKU in Red Rock with the oh so rare Khaki top and interior. I don't know why more people don't have this color combo, it was obviously the best looking option at the time.

(after a weekend in New Hampshire)

So 9 years and 200k miles later I have retired it from daily driver duties and really only use it for when I need it in winter, trips, and weekends because of some big maintenance I just completed. Last fall the radiator blew and after having it replaced, the head gaskets started to leak. I'm never getting rid of this rig, and couldn't afford to have all the work done, so I did it all myself. Tore the engine down to the block, had the heads checked and cleaned up, then put it all back together with new exhaust manifolds, thermostat, and all the gaskets, bolts, etc. that go along with it. This engine is running as smooth as the day I got it, it really is unbelievable.

As for upgrades, the only things I have really done to it so far are the front and rear bumpers, which are from Olympic 4x4 products. I really like the minimal design, sturdy build and the light weight. My next immediate upgrades will be some new lighting, including some KC Hilites I found lying around my dad's basement, backup lights, and interior lights. I also have a design for a storage/bed system for the back since I prefer to sleep in the Jeep rather than in a tent if I can (less setup/clean up time) Eventually I plan to do new suspension, rock rails/steps, and armor for underneath, not necessarily in that order and then who knows what else. Priority and other projects will most likely be determined by budget and trip planning.

I'll post some more pictures later, but I think I have maxed out my "break" from work with this so far...

Added heated Trucklite LEDs, Olympic 4x4 front and rear Rock bumpers with D-ring mounts, and some pictures of the engine getting pulled apart for the head gasket replacement.

Down to the block

Everything spread out

And back together again...

Trip to Assateague back in January

And after some trails in Vermont a couple weeks back

Next up I'll share some photos of moving the Infiniti sub to free up space in the trunk and my storage/bed build. Planning to get started on that this weekend in preparation for a trip to Vermont and Maine over the week of July 4th.

One of my least favorite designs of the JKU is the subwoofer box in the trunk space. It is so awkwardly placed, blocks about 6 inches of space and creates this little nook behind it that rarely gets filled with gear when loading up. I was surprised to see that nobody had really posted any fix for this on any of the usual forums, which was especially surprising when I started taking it apart and realized how easy it was to fix. I unbolted the box, took the cover off, unclipped the electrical connectors, and it was gone. Then to move it, I pulled the wires back under the carpet and routed them down in the cubby hole below the trunk, reconnected everything and secured the sub so it couldn't move. Piece of cake, took about 5-10 minutes and the only thing I am trying to decide is whether or not to cut a hole in the floor and reuse the cover to make it look nicer, but it sounds fine like this so I may just leave it. Here are some pics.

The wires are long enough to just pull them back under the carpet and route them underneath the carpet to the cubby hole.

Speaker sits right on the end of the cubby.

Now I have a nice clean, open trunk space for my next project, a storage/sleeping platform.

It's been a while, but I've done a bunch more to Georgia's JK. I picked up a set of springs and shocks off a dealer mechanic that pulled them from a Rubicon they were upgrading for a customer. Brand new, never off the lot springs and shocks with a higher compression rate and a Teraflex leveling kit got me about 3" of lift in the front and 2" in the back all for about $300 and still rides like the stock suspension did before it had 200k miles on it.

I also picked up some Rubicon rock rails from a friend for a nice price. Here is a pic with the lift, rock rails, and new 33" Hercules Terra Trac AT2's. I went back and forth about tires, whether or not to go with something more expensive but generally well established like BFG or Cooper Discoverer, but read a lot of reviews on these tires that kept impressing me. Talking to a local tire shop that has been around for three generations and I have known for a long time sealed the deal. The guys there said these tires are incredible, and the company really stands behind them with their 60k mile replacement warranty. So far, they have been great on the highway, trails, mud, wet grass, etc. so we will see how they hold up.

Back in August, I was happy to make it out to the Mid-Atlantic Overland Festival for Friday and Saturday nights and got to explore the area. Next year I will definitely take the extra day and head down Thursday because there are so many great trails in the area and the people at the event were great.
