I’ve had to travel with fuel cans inside my vehicle a few times while traveling through disaster stricken areas in a rented rig. I used a NATO style can with a sealed dry bag around it, just to be extra safe, and never had a problem. In most cases when the dry bag was opened I never even smelled the fuel. Hope this helps.

I keep a 2.5 gal wavion metal nato style can in my Escape all the time with no problem. I even have had the larger 5gal can laying on its side without any smell what so ever. Just open them very slowly. Sometimes they’ll burp out some gas when opened too fast. Then it’s my fault when they smell. Lol. I de-EPA’d the spouts that came with them so they pour without the “good for the environment” spillage I always get with the spring loaded EPA “good for the environment” spouts. Now I don’t have the vapor escaping or spillage which really is great.
Scepter brand military jerrys seal super tight too. Canadian made, used by the military, super durable, and I believe they're cheaper than wavians.

If get the military version. The civilian ones are thinner and don't seal as well. I have both. The red will self vent.
Yes, those are good as well... Though they can get very pricy. I bought a pair of cheap knockoff steel cans.... FYI... They seal well enough that if you have them on your roof rack in the sun they will inflate and warp under the pressure.... I now have one can that is creased and disfigured, but the crimp/weld held, so not bad for cheap knockoffs!

This is no where near the quality of the Scepter Military Fuel Cans. I've used both military surplus NATO metal cans and the Scepters MFCs with a strong preference for the latter. Unfortunately, its getting very difficult to find the Scepter cans in the US at any sort of reasonable price since they're no longer commercially available (possibly due to US air pollution regs??). If you can find them and will be using them for gas rather than diesel, be sure the cap gaskets are Viton (grayish black) and you'll also need a spout and a wrench. There seems to be a fairly robust market on ebay for all the components.

Ive seen what can happen to people who carry fuel or propane inside a vehicle and crash or are crashed into. 10 years clinical research in a large tertiary burn center. If they survive, they and their families are never the same again. Always mount on the outside of the vehicle or trailer. There are so many options for secure mounts outside that it is simply ignorant to mount inside. They often don't spill, but are punctured. I have 10's of thousands of photos showing the ER, OR, countless follow up procedures, and lingering effects of improper fuel storage inside and outside. One young lady who was 3 years old when I first started was burned over 92% of her body when the fuel can inside their SUV ruptured. She is now 21 and still undergoing surgeries.
Think twice before transporting fuel inside.

I like the cheaper Midwest jerry cans with 1 major caveat. I replace the caps immediately with EZ-POUR solid caps. They have a robust rubber o-ring. 5+ years and zero issues.
