Gaia Pro Users

Are there any Gaia Pro users here? Have you used the desktop based routing tools to develop your routes yet?

I ask because I'm wondering if anyone else if having the same issues I'm experiencing when attempting to create routes. The automatic paths for following roads seems to be very intermittent and their server seems very sluggish in processing the clicks along the route.

I'm also noticing that as I lay out the route, I have to keep checking back to the beginning to make sure it hasn't moved. It's getting very frustrating because I want our info to be spot-on for sharing, but it's taking hours to plot versus 10 minutes like it was before.

I'm almost ready to give Hema a try since they seem to have resolved some of their beta issues.

Anyhow... thoughts?

I have used Gaia Pro a little bit, but I find to be a lot of work to try to map out routes. The user interface is very cumbersome as well. I have kinda stopped using them to map out routes because of that. I have used the Hema app but its essentially the same thing as GAIA, as in I really cant tell the difference between the two apps.

Not a Pro Member so I can't help you there, but I use Google Earth to map everything out, then upload to the Gaia website. That seems to work pretty well for me. I have had extremely good luck contacting Gaia customer service when I have had issues with the app or web service also. They always respond to me right away.

I feel the same about HEMA maps. We were looking at the platform at Overland Expo last year and actually mentioned how similar it was to Gaia's stuff. The guy at the booth didn't take to kindly to that. I have nothing against Hema at all, honestly I really like Gaia and their customer service and that's why I've stuck with it.

Hema sucks for routing. Ive been using Gaia without issue. Hema's app is like the first generation of Gaia and they still want $20 for it.

Gotta laugh at the post where the Hema guy did't take kindly to the Gaia reference.

For the original poster CONTACT Gaia support! It is the BEST way to get help period. I am all for helping folks on here but if you think you are having an issue with their server or anything else contact them. They are very good at responding. I don't use the online routing. I only use the iPad. It can be hit and miss depending on the map layer you are using. You can turn auto-routing off and simply plot a bunch of points but that is time consuming. I think routing will improve over time. They are also very responsive to feedback if take the time to give it.

I notice the auto paths work great on some layers and slim or not at all on different layers. None the less I still like the app and its desktop route planning. As long as your are relatively close to your route on the marking I don't see a huge issue. Gaia definitely takes some getting used to however once you have used it a bit it's super easy and functions great!

While auto-routing is nice I have never had it work well with forest roads and trails. I typically just hand draw routes on my iPad in Gaia when required. I have never relied on the online version. Who knows maybe in the future it will work well. I have seen auto-routing put me down parallel roads but no idea why. A new version of Gaia is coming out soon so you may want to wait before making any final decisions.

Even with the slow and buggy desktop portion, it's still the best map app out there. I'm thinking it's mostly a server issue since they've gained a ton of subscribers since I first started using it. Back then it was quick and worked like a charm, but not so much right now. Strangely enough, the auto route feature on the tablet works pretty darn good when you have the map downloaded (which further confirms a server issue). Good things on the way from Gaia, hang in there...

Yeah I havent used the app version yet, Ill be using an android tablet. The main reason I was trying to get the auto route to work is I did not want to hand draw my route from SoCal to Michigan haha. But thats ok, I think I found a way for me that works. Find everything I want to check out on google and make a waypoint of it, then map out the route. Then I should be able to load the whole map into Gaia and just let it hang out on the window just to have something to go by, nothing is really set in stone anyway once you get going. I also have an older in dash Eclipse nav that has a decent map on it.

I hope the new version comes with both an android and ipad update at the same time or before July either way

It is on the roadmap but I do not know a date for MVUMs.

The new app is close to being done. I'm on the alpha testing team. With it being completely re-written from the ground up lots of testing has to take place. iOS version only so iPhone and iPad. My assumption is once they get through a few .1, .2 versions and they are happy with the iOS rollout Android development will begin. The user interface has changed a bit so it will take a couple of tries to get used to it but the app is faster and more goodies. Especially for Pro users.

Gaia is aware and they have a GIS specialist looking at it. They are just focused on finishing the core update. I'm one of the people who has been pushing for it.

I've had the best luck plotting routes in Google Earth and then exporting the file to Gaia for use on an iPad. I also use a Delorme InReach for GPS and link it to my iPad - seems to be a very solid approach so far.
