I wondered where you went Jon. No worries, got you in the log anyway. Happy New Year!
Just wondering why are so many Net's concerned about the Log?
Ones that I've listened to either over the air or over the Internet all seem very concerned with getting every callsign/name into the log.

I host a Net every Saturday Night. I keep an accurate log for several reasons.... first it’s part of the rules (even a question on the technicians exam). Secondly if anyone challenges the Repeater or even the net you then have records of everyone that uses the service. Without accurate Logs, a bad call sign would be taken as either a pirate station or the organization padding their numbers. Now, how often does this happen? Not often, but I have had to challenge the frequency coordinators in Oregon, Washington and Idaho 2 times a piece within the past year for “bad” planning on their part by putting a repeater on the air too close to frequencies already in use... each time my (and the other Net control) logs is the o my thing that saved the old repeaters from being terminated.

It can also help evaluate if a net is worth continuing or show to the server owners that we are bringing in traffic to their nodes/repeaters.

And since I am a data analyst here 's a graph showing the weekly check ins for all of the net logs I could find. We started the end of Dec 2018 so there is only one dot for that year and since we have only had one net for 2021 there is also only one dot for this year.
Our average has gone from 12 check-ins in 2019 to 16 check-ins in 2020. Net controls, keep posting your logs and I will keep this going and update if anyone is interested, maybe do a mid-year check in or something.

Calling all radio amateurs!

That's how we open the Overland Bound ham radio net every Friday. Hopefully it's one way we announce that everyone is welcome. This is a plea to regular and new attendees alike.

The cadre of net control operators have done a heroic job keeping the net active for the last 2+ years, not missing a single Friday. However, due to pandemic challenges, family commitments, and other life events we've been stretched pretty thin. Unfortunately, I must also begin backing out as net control.

Is there anyone in our community willing to join us running the net? Any assistance is appreciated and the commitment can be as few or as many Fridays as works for you.

If you are willing and available to help with the net please respond here or reach out directly to myself or any of the regular net control operators.

Thank you!

I have been trying to get on for about a year, on DMR. Last friday I was able to hear bits and pieces of the net, but it was not continuous. I am using a pi-star setup for DMR only. I have Brandmeister DMR Bridge 3148905 and K4CEG configured as static talk groups, and at net start I link to one of the TGs with the radio as well ( a Alinco DJ-MD5). I missed this Friday but will try again on the 15th.

I have a separate pi-star setup for D-Star and have no problems with it.

Hope to hear ya'all on the Net.

Good evening everyone.
Tonight's net topic is overland shelters, what we use or what we'd like to have. Is there a preference between rooftop tents, ground tents, trailers, etc.?
Hope everyone can make it tonight.

We had a great net tonight. Thank you everyone who was able to join. I mentioned on the net that Will, W8ILL was on frequency a little earlier. It was nice to chat with him and he mentioned he'll be joining his node to the StarLink node in the future.

We talked about our preferred shelters when camping. The setups ranged from sleeping bag under the stars to comfy bed in the earth cruiser. Below I'll post a picture or two of the cot-tent I'm trying out. Seems to work well in the pickup bed but I'll need more time to work out the kinks.

Also, Brien K7XPO mentioned a couple of web sites for us to check out.

Tonight's raw notes:
1 kb0pobCharlesCOx
2ke6gvkMikest johns azx
3kj7mfvMikeor10 meters doing ok in la grand or this week. Use ground tent or sleeping bag under the stars. Run 89 ford bronco. Minimal setup, usually part of fishing or hunting trip. Sleeping bag, tarp. Yes, participating in winter field day from home on backup power.
4w7brBrentaz/Not so sunny in AZ. Earth cruiser, have had pop up camper and roof top tent. All have ups and downs. Not avail for next round.
5k7xpoBrienazHad snow in AZ. Heads up - when all else fails kits dot com. Kommandostore dot com. Great deals on first aid kits and bags.
6ki5bee/ve3Calvinont caFull size tundra. Couple s ystems for bed. Have bed slide in back. Second system is tarp that can be setup in different configurations. Kitchen or out of rain. Have cabellas cot with bug net. Takes up too much space but nice to have.
7k6sjgSeanx
8 vk7vwkRandallHobart TasmaniaCool for summer wx. Current project is building a bed in back of van. Light weight cozy for 2 people.

Sorry I missed it, Ed. Meant to get on, but I guess I got too comfortable in the recliner and ended up falling asleep. Still crazy at work, so I guess I needed it. Anyway, I finally got the camper I've been salivating over for the better part of the last two years and the maiden campsite ended up being a truck stop parking lot on the way back from North Carolina after I picked it up, lol. The tent has now been relegated to the attic and the XYL is beyond happy about it. It'll make packing for a trip easier for sure and can't wait to put it through its paces.

We briefly talked about Winter Field Day during last weeks net so I thought I'd share a couple of pictures from my effort. I went to the Olympic National Forest hoping to get to a nice hilltop location but was blocked by recent snow. I backed down the forest road to around 1500 ft level where the rain was just turning to snow and setup on the side of the road. Not what I hoped for, being blocked on 3 sides by hills but still made some contacts to the south east.
Here's a few photos:

You can just make out the DX Commander multi band vertical in front of the truck.

I love the truck.

How do you like the DX Commander? Which model do you have. I have been drooling over the DX Commanders for a few months and I think would be a perfect solution for my antenna system problem. The other thing about the DX commander is the fact that it’s super portable and easy to set up by yourself.
