I've got an 03 Eddie Bauer explorer. Currently it's immobile. I think it has to do with the rear wheel bearings/axle and brakes. Basically when I give it gas the chassis moves but the tires don't budge. It's sitting in the parking lot of a local walmart because I really can't afford to fix it or have it towed. It's been there going on 2 weeks. I have all my gear in it.. I basically live out of it. What are your thoughts? Should I try and sell it, or fix it up? I want to take it overlanding in South america on a research assignment, but not sure if it's worth it.

Great, capable vehicle (I have the pleasure of maintaining one for a close friend, a bit older though - 1998 4.0 auto - try getting a steering rack for a RHD version !!!). I say fix it and use it.

I used to have an 02, those transmissions in the third gens like to fail and then they wont go anywhere, like you are describing, that would be my guess as to your problem. Mine was starting to fail for the second time when I sold it last year. As for taking it to south america for a trip, I would feel much safer taking a second gen like nickburt posted above.

Its still pushing at 210k miles lol... im getting ready to travel to the west in about a week. Not sure if it will make it or not, but we will see. If i can find a gen 2 maybe i will pick it up. I can feel the transmission start to slip on 3rd and i need to prime the engine sometimes before starting it. Havent done much to it, but i plan on exploring a bit over the next few years.
