We’ve just completed our last long trip, 51,000 km around Canada, and are selling the Jeep Wrangler JK Sahara Unlimited 4 door which was perfect for the trip. We took out the rear seats and fitted a bed frame and custom-made mattress, with storage space below the bed. The forward section of the bed frame slides back to provide full access when not sleeping. We have a 20 L Alpicool refrigerator behind the right hand seat. The Wrangler is well equipped in standard form - an inverter and 12V outlets front and rear, GPS navigation, Sirius satellite radio (subscription needed). It’s a 3.6 L petrol engine, automatic transmission, with cruise control, leather seating with heated front seats, and air conditioning. It’s Tank Green, including the “colour-coordinated” rear roof panel and spare wheel cover.
The Wrangler is ideal for “minimalist” overland travel - comfortable on long highway sectors, and highly capable on unsurfaced roads and offroad. If you travel light there’s good space and it will take you into remote country. The range is 700-800 km so more than enough for the Dempster or TransLabrador with no need for reserve fuel. Fuel consumption out of cities is somewhere between 10-12 L/100 km (24-28 mi/gal).
We’ve done nothing to modify the engine, transmission, or suspension since the Wrangler is very capable in standard form. The vehicle is in excellent condition, with 136,000 km (85,000 miles) on the clock. It has been serviced by the book and has been very reliable (the only repair in our 19 months of ownership having been a replacement headlight bulb). We’d be happy to set off on another 50,000 km trip in it however our next trip will be in Africa/Asia and shipping costs have gone up so much that it makes more sense to buy overseas.
We’ve taken the bed out and put the rear seats back after the trip however the bed and mattress are easily re-installed and we’d be happy to include them within the price; speaking of which, we’re looking for CAD 34,900 (USD 25,700). It’s available in Vancouver, BC, and is registered in BC.
