I’ve always thought of gmrs as fm cb.

We've had 60cm FM CB in Australia since the 1980s. Took a few years to catch on but everyone in the overland community uses it now.
It's similar to GMRS but requires no licence and is on the other end of the 70cm HAM band.

Thanks for sharing the information. That's interesting, because frequency modulation of course offers some advantages especially for in-vehicle use. In Australia, CB is in the 70cm band, so UHF CB, right? But in the US - same as in Europe - it is in the 11m band or around 27Mhz, correct?

Right.
We have GMRS which is UHF and though requires a license (FRS is same frequencies but unlicensed less power) is basically UHF CB as Tahoe noted.
CB is 27MHz in the states.
