First off, I'm new here. I appreciate y'all letting me in. Spent some time reading already, lots of good info on this forum.

I'm also new to this whole "overlanding" thing. I have an '08 Toyota FJ Cruiser that I intend to slowly build into a rig for exploring the back country.

I would like to start with a roof top tent, but I'm frankly totally overwhelmed by the options and I also don't fully understand the nuts and bolts of how to make it happen. I am hoping I can find some specific advice here and bypass costly trial and error stages.

Basically, I'm leaning towards a clam shell tent, and I think the tent is all I want on the roof, i.e. no additional cargo. Do I need a full roof rack to do this? Or are there more basic "tent platforms" that are more minimal? Could I even do it with the stock factory FJ roof rack?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Welcome to the site! RTTs aren't vehicle specific, racks are. I would encourage you to continue your research into your vehicle and what rack fits and what style you may want with particular emphasis on static and dynamic loads of the rack. There are many videos on installation of tents and racks. You may have bars/rails already on your vehicle that will suffice without a full roof rack if you can orient it in position you want. Look at the installation videos that show how they are attached and you will understand much better what you need.

Had an ‘07 FJCRUISER with the stock roof rack and mounted an ARB awning and a Smittybilt RTT to it. I lost about 40 miles per tank in range due to the air drag. No other issues.
