What did you do to make your truck and overlander or off-roader?

Why did you do it?

Let's see pictures and videos!

My last one only required 35x12.5r18 Cooper STT's on 18x9 +18 wheels. Fit perfectly, box stock. Was alarmingly capable with just that simple mod.

My current F250 Fx4 is unmolested. But I will be making changes in this order:

Rhino liner (done).
Fluid film the frame and axles (done).
Truck Claws (done).
Hilift Jack (done).
Hilift winch kit (done).
Hood mounted ditch lights aimed out sideways.
Tremor Running boards, when available.
37x13.5 r18 Cooper STT Pros.
Method 18x9 +18mm NV wheels.
Bushwacker Extend a fenders.
Wilco hitch gate for the matching 37" spare. Keeping the OEM spare under the bed.
BDS 4" Radius arm kit.
Accutuned Fox 2.5 DSC shocks.
Air compressor.
Sumo Rebel springs.
Regear to 4.88.
Add front locking diff so that truck is locked front and rear. Yukon Grizzly.
Flat black vinyl wrap to protect paint.

Budget is about $10,000. Well under the cost of a Powerwagon.

Bundutec Bunduvry camper. Maybe, only if I stick with overlanding and want to do the TAT.

I'm also considering going to a 20" wheel so that I can select from 37x12.5r20 tires that are E rated to carry 3750. Yeah they'll ride harsher, but they'll haul a camper better........

Cooper also makes a 35x12.5r20 that's F rated.

99 F250 7.3 auto 2wd came with a 6" lift on it. I added a shell and stuff.

Most important for off-road;

ARB dual compressor
Detroit Locker
4:10 regearing

I have done a lot of the typical on line forum things to the truck to improve its durability.
Bigger tranny cooler
better air cleaner which includes an intake
4" exhaust
Bilstien 5150 shocks which we destroyed in Baja this past Jan.
Cooper AT tires
and changing all the typical sensors that can go bad.

Everything else was for our convert while camping/glamping.

We stayed with 17" wheels for taller side walls and 17" tires are less expensive and you have more options in 17" according to the tire store.

Baja 0083.jpg

This climb was very rocky and steep, biggest issue was I could not see much of the trail in front of me because of the hood.

Awesome! I must do a Baja trip at some point. what’s that tent off the side of the truck there? Is that an awning with sides? Looks like it’s great quality from what I can see.

Thanks for starting the thread...you can see the progression of our build here. Next steps hopefully will include a Buckstop front bumper and winch, and probably some injector work...he made it 250K+, but I think it might be time for some new ones plus cups and harnesses...

Im just over 200 and i have bad Gplugs and need harnesses. Love the 7.3 but its time to pay the piper...:disrelieved:
Engines are great, but everything else is the same as all cars - rubber, wiring, seals, and so on need attention at 17 to 20 years old. Now my 65 Malibu is really needy currently.

My beast is going in for surgery tomorrow...new injectors, cups, under-valve cover wiring harnesses, glow plugs, and a deleted turbo pedestal. My bank account is already screaming “uncle”, but I’m in way too deep at this point as it is! [emoji53]

I know the road in the video well. I am glade you were able to see some of Baja's best. Those long washboards will beat your shocks. I have melts more than a couple sets up in Baja. I love this area, how were the crowds at the points?

Not sure for the reason - but we only saw about 30 other vehicles the whole way up. At most places we were the only ones there. I was really nice.

Im sure there are spots a full size wont fit without causing damage but for the most part you should be able to enjoy 99.9% of the west

We live out west in So Cal, we have turned back a couple of times in 6 years. Most of the time I turned back it was because the truck was only a 2wd at the time.

There are trails that are narrow - but you looking to go wheeling or outback off road camping? Because there are wheeling trails that break really prepped jeeps.
In the end it comes down to knowing your rig and your driving skills, then taking time to get better at it. We test our rig almost every time we go out.

I plan to do more off-road touring than hard core wheeling. I like the room and hauling capabilities of a full sized truck. I have never been in a Jeep that road very well and if I am making a 2,000 or so mile round trip comfort is important. Thanks for the input.
