I’m sure most of y’all with small vehicles have space issues. On my 98 XJ I have 0 space for two separate batteries so I was going to try an Odyssey or Northstar dual purpose battery which do y’all prefer?

I have the Odyssey battery as my second/aux battery. AGM batteries need to be charged every so often so a trickle charger is needed if you are not using it for a period of time. I have solar hooked to mine so its always charging. No experience with the other battery but I am sure you cant go wrong with either.

I read that article but somehow found it not that helpful.

I posted a question over on the “Rig Q & A” forum regarding the idea that batteries like this might need a special charger, but I have received no response. Link is below, if you care.

But I’ll watch this thread and maybe learn something.

hi over here in Europe the best system for looking after your duel batteries is a system called CTEK ,,they have a intelligent battery program system but can look after standard and AGM ...myself and a lot of my colleges use the CTEK duel charge system.. take a good look at the
CTEK | 100A Off Road Charging System Package, Pn: 40-155

the system is a complete plug and play then just leave it to do its thing ...

"The MXS 10 is a fully automatic 8-step charger that delivers 10A to 12V batteries from 20-200Ah and is also suitable for maintenance charging up to 300Ah. It includes battery diagnosis to establish whether your battery can receive and retain a charge, a Recond mode for restoring and reconditioning stratified and deeply discharged batteries, a winter program for charging in cold weather and an AGM option which maximises the performance life of most Stop/Start batteries. The MXS 10 also has a temperature sensor for optimised charging and it can even be used as a power supply source for 12V equipment."
  1. Desulphation; uses pulses to restore sulphated batteries
  2. Soft start; Starting mode for charging cycle. To prepare the battery for bulk charging.
  3. Bulk; Main charge until 80% of the charge is complete. Carried out at a constant current.
  4. Absorption; Final part of the charge up to 100%. Carried out at a constant voltage.
  5. Analysis; Checks the self-discharge rate.
  6. Recond; This step is only used to restore deeply discharged batteries.
  7. Maintenance charge – Float; Carried out at a constant voltage.
  8. Maintenance charge – Pulse; uses pulses when necessary to keep the battery charge at the correct level.

No info on the battery but as far as space is concerned I have seen some mods made to put a second battery in the little useless space on the passenger side in the back. It was on one of the cherokee forums. It required reworking the whole panel but seemed to be a better use of the space. I cannot remember if it had a lead to the alternator, though that seems a bit of a run. Setting up a solar to something built in there would not be too complicated.

I’m curious how it wasn’t helpful. It gave a breakdown of cranking amps and amp hours and cost. Once I figured out my load of all my auxiliary things I can decide what battery would work best.

One of the batteries isn’t made anymore, one isn’t dual purpose, the tests are looking at an extreme draw and not long-term usage, they have no information about historical failure rates or company history and reputation and, while they give a chart with some numbers, they really don’t give any conclusions or recommendations.

They said they were going to use them for a year. That’s the info I want. What does someone who has used and bounced a battery for a year recommend.

You do make a good point they haven’t revisited it since the article. I look at it a different way, they just give you the performance #’s for each one and its price point. And as far as history and recommendations I base it off of customer reviews because most rigs are different and set up different they have different needs so it’d be hard to recommend.

:Update: So I went with a Super Start from my local Oriellys. Mainly because 1. It’s local and there are tons of them around here. 2. I picked it up for a steal, $150 with a 3 year warranty. It’s not exactly what I was looking for but it’ll work for the next few years and I’ll more than likely figure out a true dual battery setup. IMG_1372.JPG
