So the first weekend get away of the summer wasn't in a tent. Wife booked a small house for us and our 2 1/2 year old son in Beulah CO, it's in the foothills about 45 West of Pueblo. We left Castle Rock Thursday morning, it snowed about 8 inches at home as we drove south out of the storm on I25 and cut over west to Beulah. Its not the trip there I'm sharing in this post but the return trip is what I'm sharing. Friday morning we drove to 45 minutes Bishop's Castle, we took hwy 78 over the range to hwy 165. 13miles of the road is unpaved through San Isabel National forest. We explored the Castle, and went back and through the forest back to house in Beulah as it was starting to snow. We left Beulah this morning, went back through the forest a 3rd time, which was a bit more fun with the fresh snow to head north on 165, then up to Florence CO where we took Phantom Canyon Road to Victor CO. 25 miles that was once a railroad starts at 5500 feet and ends 9500 feet, 2 tunnels, several bridges, 1 is wooden as up zig zig up the canyon. The road is car friendly, though at least half of the road was washboard. I recommend it, the veiws are awesome. Victor is a mining down south of Cripple Creek. Lots of old mines and mining equipment in town.
