Definition of Overlanding

yeah, pretty hard to have a specific definition for the term "overlanding"....but do y'all know the difference between a Fairy Tale and an Overlanding story?

No?

well, a Fairy Tale starts off "Once upon a time..."
an Overlanding story starts off "No shit, there I was..."
Ha-ha... Yep, Same way you start a combat story in the military or the fire service. The only way its legit.

"So there I was, setting up camp in the middle of nowhere, when Bigfoot came charging through my campsite, nearly running into my fully built overland rig while being chased by the headless horseman, the knights of the round table, king Tut's foot soldiers and a yeti bringing up the rear." :P

But where was the fair lady?

I should think Bigfoot had her slung over his shoulder or something like that.

What does "overlanding" mean? Why, I think the answer is obvious: it's building a rig that could travel though deepest Africa during the worst of conditions and driving said rig between Holiday Inns as you travel across your chosen continent. That's certainly the way I have always interpreted it.

I just saw that the Outdoors channel is going to have a sow everything overland with new discos for vehicles

It's camping, hopefully off road, in a vehicle capable enough to keep me from getting butt raped by Bigfoot.

Or the Skunk Ape.
Or the Grass Man.
Or skinwalkers.
Or the current vice president.
Or flying monkeys.
Or visitors.
Or refugee's.
Or angry burros.

.......with a skottle and a Pepsi can stove.

So...I’m new here and if this has already been discussed please directly me to the thread. But I wanted to get some thoughts on how other people define overlanding. My buddies and I recently had a disagreement on what we felt it was and I’ve come to realize that it’s a spectrum and can’t be defined to just one single thing. So what’s overlanding look like for you? Thanks!!

Car camping is now called "Overlanding"

Overlanding is like pornography, hard to describe but you know it when you see it.

For my own sake, I regard Thor Heyerdahl's "Kon Tiki" trip and Tim Severin's "Brendan Voyage" as examples of overlanding. Those were epic journeys. That they crossed water instead of land does not matter to me. It is the same spirit. If anything, the word "overlanding" is what fails to encompass the concept.
