I just guided two overlanding tours through Death Valley (with ModernJeeper) with some lessons learned about the desert:
1. Always expect wind.
2. Have a practiced, camp set-up system and always use it.
3. Make sure everyone in your group has a good, working radio that they can hear.
4. Air-down; even a little; and avoid unnecessary stucks. 15-20 lbs without beadlocks.
5. If you use a roof-top system or drag a trailer, drive more cautiously than normal; don't do crazy stuff you would do with an empty rig.
6. Loaded down, heavy, overlanding rigs must have a beefed-up suspension or you'll be beaten to death on washboard roads.

Did I mention that when in the desert, to park your rig to block the wind -- always!
Flowers were not popping yet. But the canyons were magical.
