Was under the front end of my 4th gen 4runner that I picked up a few mo ths back looking for a rattle and noticed a torn CV boot. I had been looking into doing this myself and seen some people saying it better to replace the entire shaft rather then just the boot. What are your thoughts and should I replace both sides or just the one side. The other part of the is the price differences I am seeing not really sure what the higher costs ones will got me.

Joel, I just replaced my driver side last week. Torn boot. Most guys have come to the conclusion that replacing the axle is the way to go. What I did (and you're in the same boat) is replaced my axle, and bought a boot/grease kit. I will reboot my old one as a spare, and you and I are fortunate that both axles are identical. 3rd gen 4runners have different axles. While you're in there, replace the diff seal as well. It's $20 insurance of a part that will eventually leak a bit.

Also...look online at several Toyota OEM parts dealers (online dealerships usually) for deals. The half-shafts are not cheap, but you can find better deals. Don't forget to calculate shipping in your research.

Thanks, that was my plan and am now on hold till I get some new shocks in. If I am going to tear this apart I might as well do it all at once. Did not know about the diff seal and will definitely look into that. As for the axles I'm seeing price ranging from $70 all the way up to a few hundred dollars but I'm not seeing anything that tells me what the real difference is. Obvious I don't feel like I want to go with the cheapest alternative but I don't think I need to go with the most expensive either as it will not be putting this rigs for any type of serious rock crawling so just trying to figure out which brand of axle would be better suited for me.
