Just installed the "ConsoleVault" Safe in the center console of my 4th Gen 4Runner and a very happy with it. They make this safe for a number of popular makes/models of vehicles and also have a generic version. Thought some of our members would be interested in checking them out, Go TO: www.consolevault.com

I purchased one for my brother's Xterra. It was a nice easy install and will dissuade someone in a quick smash-and-grab, however, it isn't a proper safe. I got him the combo lock so he can leave it latched but unlocked while he is in the vehicle if he needs to access it while driving. The key lock didn't make much since because you are likely to keep the key with your ignition key. The digital lock has to be keyed open each time, so you can't leave it unlocked and access it easily while driving.

I plan to get one for myself with the combination lock, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Can you post a picture to see yours? Did you get a key or combo lock?

I have some pictures that I wanted to post but I don't quite know how to get/import/paste (whatever) them into this Forum post. If someone could tell me how, I'd be glad to. If you go their website, they have quite a few pics as well. I went with the 4 Digit combo lock.

May I suggest that you go with the 4 digit combo lock as opposed to the 3 digit. It will cost a bit more (+ $35 if my memory is correct), however according to the company the 4 digit is the only one that is DOJ certified for use by Law Enforcement, as it increases the possible combinations from 1000 to 10,000. Not sure it we're talking about the same set up here, as this one is not a Digital Lock, per se, but rather a 4 digit, numerical mechanical lock, which can be easily opened while driving and just as easily made secure when away from the vehicle. Either way, it might not be for everyone, but it seems like a decent, easy to install, setup at a reasonable price so I though I'd post it for those who might be interested.

Anyone dedicated enough to crack a 1,000 possible combination lock will just take a prybar or saw to it and be done much faster.

Interesting, I've just installed the Front Runner safe, key only. Seems nice and strong but mostly its a stealthy storage compartment lifting up my centre console

The way I see it, any of these type of lockable storage/safes are much better than one's glove box!

I've been using mine for 2 years/46,000 miles in my 5Gen 4Runner. I keep cash, boat keys, shop keys, wallet, rechargeable flashlight, matches, misc. stuff and passport in it when traveling. I made an organizer with leftover Trekpak. Easy install, just remove the factory bolts and replace with the ones supplied. Still allows use of the power outlet in the console ( note flashlight charging ). I have the 3 combo lock and keep it unlocked when driving, then simply sweep my finger across the lock when exiting the vehicle to lock it. Love it. Wouldn't have another rig without it. Cheap insurance.
