On the 22nd, we set off from Seattle Washington to Baja in search of sun, whales, and whatever adventures we could get ourselves into. Our first night we stopped in Shasta Lake area, then Joshua Tree on night two before setting off for Mexico on day 3.
Crossing through Mexicali was a breeze and the drive down the 5 was beautiful and fun. There's an unfinished portion that is a pretty rough gravel road for around an hour. After that it was getting dark and we made our way to Bahia of LA. The roads to the bay are nice, but at night it's pretty dangerous with all the cows congregating near the road. We stayed at both Daggett’s and Archelon, but preferred Archelon for their cabanas right on the beach. We were told there’s some good camping and overlanding South East of town and will definitely be exploring that next time with a few more friends.
From there we headed to the Laguna Ojo de Liebre campgrounds to stay on the beach and watch whales. We were really early in the season but there were 5 whales already, and more coming daily to give birth. It was nice because were were one of 3 groups staying so it was private and relaxed.
We stopped in Guerrero Negro for fish tacos, then headed back to Bay of LA for some more fishing and a good place to stay before heading back. On our return we went up the 1 to Ensenada which isn’t nearly as nice a drive as the 5, but going up the 3 to Tecate through wine country was nice. The Tecate border took all of 5 minutes with the crossing agent not even looking at me and waving us through, which was kind of odd but I’m not complaining.
Looking back, I’ll definitely be heading down in the future—hopefully all the way to La Paz and Cabo for some good fly fishing. From Seattle we did about 3,600 miles total, and for our 10 day window it was pretty grueling. Next time we’ll take more time off and really explore deeper.
