Choosing a Fuel - RtW options

  • HTML tutorial
Have posted a similar question elsewhere in the past, but interested in the view of Overland Bound members.

Looking to start building a rig with the capability to go RtW if i so desired. As a european, the obvious true 4wd options are all diesel powered in the main, unless i look at older models(Landcruiser Amazon/ Patrol Y60 etc) for petrol choices. If you then start going down the path that Euro 3 or older to avoid the electronics risk you start limiting options(and by default older base vehicles import an inherent reliability risk)

Presently there is a really negative view towards CRD and its inability to deal with high sulphur fuels found in some countries, but will this be a problem longer term?

If you were building a medium to large(upto 3.5t gvw maximum)overland rig what would be the fuel of choice for an RTW capable base vehicle(and one which is available in Europe please).

Many thanks for any contributions.

Toyota VDJ7 as 79 single cab or even more as 78 troopy.
The Sulphur levels in the diesel are falling, many parts of Africa have low sulphuric diesel commonly available and numbers rising permanently as at the moment masses of German diesels are rolling into 3rd world countries...
The thing is money, worthless talking about what to get until a budget is set.

Also what is your timeframe?
If it is in the next 3 years or so then get a vehicle that will accept higher sulphuric diesel like a 79 LC if you can get one in Europe. They are the most common vehicle in Southern Africa.
If your time frame is longer then maybe a newer diesel will be psoosble if you’te Careful of which countries you drive through. Some people delete the mechanics once out of their respective countries only to re-install it when they re-enter...

So in terms of the questions, time frame is 3 to 5 years, but want to do some short 'shakedown' trips first.

Vehicle Budget, well little as possible obviously, and my £12-15k including prep does exclude most "troopys" if you can see one in the UK.
