Can you have two hobbies in one?

I am going back to some old roots in exploring. I love adventure any way i can get it i guess... I just work so much that i want to make the most of my time off.

I love exploring abandoned military, industrial, forestry, or otherwise derelict areas and facilities. Old cotton gins, Oil business remains, underground bunkers, you name it. Adventure with a touch of photography. (just a little out of the box digital camera) I had a blast on the east coast when i was stationed there in the Army.

Basically i want to explore forgotten structures and facilities. If there is rumor of a haunt... I am interested^2
Spookier the better. Riskier the better. I take only memories, leave only footprints. I am super super newb regarding photography but I will do my best!

I think that this is sort of like Geocaching...

Anyone on here want to help me explore Geocaching? or whatever this crazy hobby of mine is?

The geocaching apps for your phone are pretty good. I believe there are other resources for more out of the way caches or things that would require 4x4 to get to. You might find that you like creating caches in the areas you are exploring more than looking for someone else's.

All of my hobbies come together to involve the outdoors. Overland, exploring, rock climbing, hunting, fishing etc. They all keep my truck dirty.

That is how it is working out for me, Hunting, fishing, offroading, camping etc... I plan to start with my local favorites and see if it helps. Trying to discover new facilities is the difficult part. Most of the good stuff is WWII and older. So using the web to find record of them is difficult.

I do a lot of historical work like you while overlanding. I think it is great to combine two areas of interest to make the trips more enjoyable. @IronPercheron For historical information try state and national archives to help find old military bases and historical towns based on the documents from land surveys, census records, zoning laws, building contracts, etc. sometimes you can find a county/state map of where the facility is roughly located. You can also reach out to historical societies in the regions you want to explore because they hold a lot of documentation and location of the local facilities, etc. that you are looking for. City libraries typically have archives that the public can use, but you typically have to be specific in what you are looking for.

I think almost all of my hobbies intertwine in one way or another. Hunting, Shooting, Camping, Bushcraft, the one you wouldnt think would is genealogy. I go to cemeteries in some far out places...my truck sure makes those a lot easier.

I had an online friend who spent his holidays for years in the pioneer cemeteries around the gold rush in California. He had a huge database of information regarding the people who had been buried in the area.

Thats cool..most of my ancestors came to Texas before it was a state..some even came with Stephen F Austins original 3oo hundred settlers. I want to find as many of these as I can.

Texas has rich history for sure, i think i have a good chance of getting my old history professor involved... he is a splunker! If he can find caves, i am sure we can find lots of other things. I will be going to my library tonight!

I like old factories and such. Fascinating (and sad) to see the stuff left behind, place's where people spent so much time and actually built the Country and the economy.

Cant drive to it... its an island. There are several other WWII army air corps bases there that are abandoned for the most part... aside from folks building fishing shacks

The plan is to put my 4wheeler in my flat bottom boat and run out there, drag the boat up in the weeds with the 4wheeler the go explore.
