So I came across this last night on social media. Its a monthly subscription box of outdoor and camping gear. $25 a month nets you $35 to $60 worth of outdoor gear. I've been seriously thinking about trying it out for a month or two. Has anyone tried something like this? I figured it would be a way to get gear in my hands that I never knew I needed..

Looks pretty cool, might have to look into this when I have money left over :P

*just checked some unpacking youtube vids.. I would concider one of the 'gift' boxes though. But the monthly ones.. I dno.. The November one was just chocolate, underwear and a bandana.. not really worth the money to me personally.

There's a good chance that if you never knew you needed it... you DON'T need it.

I'm in the process of slimming down my gear. Over the years we have gotten all kinds of "good stuff" that we figured we needed but in reality never (or rarely) use. For instance we had a great camp kitchen setup from Cabelas... the thing weighs a ton and we realized that all we needed was a cheap camp kitchen table that weighs 1/3 of the weight and packs down way better.

Just my 2 cents.

Obviously, that's the sensible take. Counterpoint: MOAR GEAR!

Most of these subscriptions boxes are a gimmick. There was one good one that I saw, with quality gear.. but it was like $150 a month.

And probably $150 a month :P cheap quality just doesn't exist..

But as said, the gift boxes (not monthly) look interesting to me.. The monthly ones aren't worth it I guess.

I have been a Cairn subscriber for many months, until I recently cancelled my subscription. They used to send really cool stuff, but it has gone down in quality quite a bit over the last couple of months. Looking for a better alternative. There are many out there!
Bummed to hear this.. I just decided to sign up.. Of course I have yet to get my activation email.. So far I'm not impressed. I signed up yesterday morning. I may end up cancelling before I even start.

Mystery boxes seem to be the latest hotness. I don't get it. To me it seems you're paying a premium to get a bunch of leftover event swag. Sure, it may be "collectable" but beyond that, if you're looking for useful value I think you're better off just buying what it is you need. If you don't know you need it then you probably don't.

I am subscribed to Alpha Outpost. Its not always camping and outdoor-oriented, but ive gotten pretty useful stuff from it.

I just bought the 3 month gift for my 15 year old for Christmas. He couldn't tell me what he wanted, he loves gadgets and whatnots, so I took a gamble. If anyone is interested I will post the boxes as they come in on this thread.

Ok, so I just received my first $25 entry level box from Cairn. Hope this post isn't too big of a spoiler for anyone... but for the curious folks out there, here it is...

So, they didn't lie... the retail cost of this box would be around $40 plus tax. The products seem very practical and I will definitely use them.

If anyone is interested, they also included a list of coupons for Goal Zero and others which I can post if you like.

I too got the same box.. In a strange turn of events, they sent me 2 boxes instead of just one.. I emailed them and they got back to me and said since it was their mistake I was free to keep the 2nd box. Pretty dang good customer service impression if you ask me. I was happy with the goods I got in my first box.

Yeah, I was actually thinking about bumping my subscription up to their premium Obsidian Box... that where all the cool gear is!
