Dear Sirs,

We are an Australia manufacturer specialising in offroad recovery gear with a new and innovative product and technique that offers foward and reverse recovery.

BOG OUT is a rope harness that is attached to the bogged or spinning wheel, the other end is secured and then you simply drive out. Two BOG OUTs secured on either the front or the rear wheels provides highly effective, twin diff lockers and the system will work on any vehicle up to a small tractor. It has been tried and tested in Australia for over 5 years.

We have many happy customers who already have a winch but like our product as a back up for when they need to reverse. Other customers have SUVs and cannot fit the bull bar to mount the winch. By no means is this technique new its called bush winching it been around 40+ years. You dont even need to buy anything but synthetic rope to do this. It works but by no means is it easy or the prefered way this technique should be used only after everything else has failed. It aint fun trying to untie a birds nest wrapped around your hubs,brakes and control arm in mud because you cant turn when using this method without rope slipping to one side or the other. This method is also best employed on flat ground ie stuck in sand on a beach in a straight pull not on a hill or a deep mud bog or side pulling.

On this bush craft note ill add you also dont need a hilift jack if you have metal bumpers just cut a log around 5 inches taller than your bumper wedge it between the bumper and ground the drive forward the log will pivot and lift your front or rear.

You're correct in saying that using a vehicles wheels as massive (and free) engine powered winches has been around for some time and the US Military Recovery Manual you identify is a great practical reference, using physics and bush craft. The Australian Military has some similar documents, probably hard learned shoulder to shoulder.

You might remember the old Landcruisers too with the extra hub on the front wheels, aluminium with heavy knurling. They were designed as a step to get up onto the bonnet to get the spare tire off, but were also used for winching. This system works, as does the rope between dual tires method shown in the manual, good in an emergency as you say, when all else fails. But neither work well because the binding up or slipping off problem with the dual or single wheel system, and the increased mechanical advantage and wider than designed for axle loads applied by the use of the hub system.

Don't be silly enough to try using a rope or strap to sit on your tread. It might work a bit on dry sand but will just slip off and cause the issues you describe, definitely best avoided.

The patented BOG OUT technique overcomes these issues by positively capturing the tire, so all loads are directed exactly where the vehicle is designed to be loaded, the bottom of the tire tread. This provides the most efficient tow point possible and therefore reduces loads significantly as it assists the vehicle upwards, out of the bog or over the obstruction unlike other winch, snatch or tow recoveries that tow from the chassis height, usually pulling the vehicle downwards, increasing loads.

The BOG OUT System has been torture tested thoroughly in Australia for 5 years with NO breakages and NO injuries and are recommended by 4x4 Clubs and purchased by Government Departments which do remote work. As we get closer each day to having snow set in for the Winter months, I wish I had the money to come your way in Australia! Would love to meet up with you and do some wheeling! My home is setup completely off-grid, except for cell phone that I also use as my Internet source. Not quite like living in the outback, but close. I am having issues with my solar system batteries, so there goes any extra money for a while. I priced replacement for each of my L-16 6 VDC batteries, at about $500. USD. with tax! And I need 4 batteries! So, no parts or updates, for a while, for my Diesel powered 95’Jeep XJ, and my petro 99’ 4Runner, (Surf) to you I think?

Question, does TJM make a front Pro Locker, for the clam shell style 7-1/2” front independent axle for a Surf? ARB has the Air Locker here, but that is the only selectable Locker I can find for my 99’ Toyota 4Runner?

No chance of snow here in tropical Cairns, it's coming into monsoon time, hot and humid, big fish on the beaches, and mangoes falling off trees everywhere. Great time for mud testing and filming.

No excuses for not coming over to visit mate, the $$ exchange rate is awesome for $US, make sure you let me know, I'll show you a good fishing spot, not too many crocodiles!

I rang TJM and unfortunately they don't have a solution for you, so ARB might be the your option. I also rang a specialist 4x4 engineering company and the guru is out bush until Monday. If I find something, I'll let you know.

Freshly caught fish on the barbie, with some thin sliced mangoes steaming on top of fish, good friends enjoying the beach and sun, all sounds good to me. A Crock happens to come along, then I guess I need some new Crock skin boots, along with a band around the body of my hat and anew belt to keep my shorts up! Cheers! Vance.

Actually @4wheelspulling it's funny you should say that - the fish were biting at the weekend and we (well Paul did) caught a nice little Blue Salmon off the beach. Tough life eh? Here's it is, funny - the fish was bigger in real life.

Aside from the caution that should be used if your running this on the front of an ifs vehicle, id recommend using the rear wheels to save your cv joints and half shafts. On solid axle no worries.

I would like to know what methods yall are using for land anchors in the sand, are you hooking up to another vehicle? Using a deadman with spare tire? Rebar spikes?

You're right, the anchor point should be in a reasonably straight line to the wheel. There's approximately 15 degrees leeway either side. It's a modular system so you can attach low stretch extension rope if its more convenient to anchor further away.

Using the BOG OUT does not apply any more stress or strain to your vehicle. The harness is merely giving the wheels the traction that they need to get your vehicle going again. Here's an independent article written in Caravan World Rescue Remedy - Scott Heiman

BOG OUT is a steady recovery method that is used slowly. It's easy to stop, check and adjust if necessary.

Like a winch, an anchor point is needed and if there are no handy trees then it can be another vehicle, buried tyre, star pickets & chain. NB during recovery BOG OUT uses considerably less load than higher mounted winches. The angle of recovery is highly efficient so you can get away with smaller, lighter anchor points.
