OVERDUE MOTORISTS: GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARASHANT, ARIZONA STRIP

The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office has received a call from a friend of two overdue motorists (Yisci Li, a 19-year-old male and Ciheng Wu, a 20-year-old male) that left California on Wednesday (12/28) and was heading to the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument. They had asked their friend if they were not heard from after 48 hours, to notify law enforcement. They have been entered as missing persons in San Bernardino County, California and the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Bureau of Land Management Rangers and the Western Air Rescue DPS Kingman helicopter crew are actively searching for them on the Arizona Strip. They were traveling in a 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV, silver in color. If anyone who has been in the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument in the last few days has seen this vehicle, please contact the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office at (928) 753-0753 and reference DR# 22-049440. OVERDUE MOTORISTS (FOUND): GRAND CANYON-PARASHANT NATIONAL MONUMENT, ARIZONA STRIP

Yesterday morning (12/31), the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue – along with Bureau of Land Management Rangers, Arizona Game and Fish Rangers, National Park Service Rangers, and the Western Air Rescue DPS Helicopter from Kingman went out searching for two overdue motorists who had gone out last Wednesday (12/28) in search of the Grand Canyon. For those that are not familiar with this area on the Arizona Strip – it is a remote and rugged wilderness area that varies in elevation and terrain. There are no paved roads in this area, while most are very primitive and unmaintained. In fact, when it rains (or any type of precipitation) it should be anticipated that there could be 8 to 10 inches of the worst mixture of mud and clays that lie in wait to trap a vehicle. Did we mention there is no cellular service in this area? It is highly recommended to bring plenty of recovery gear (straps and shackles) and have a winch – along with multiple vehicles to help you once the mud has disabled your vehicle. In the event you are unsuccessful with your recovery gear, make sure you have plenty of food and water (and other supplies necessary to live in your vehicle for some time – as it may be a while before any rescue teams can make their way to you). Our Western Air Rescue DPS Helicopter from Kingman made an attempt earlier in the day, but was unable to search due to the rain and low-lying clouds in the search area. After noon, National Park Service Rangers located the missing Hyundai Santa Fe SUV and shortly after, the Kingman DPS helicopter was able to make it to their location for medical evaluation. Search teams brought the stranded motorists back to the Command Post. Great job by everyone who came out to help locate them – as there is just not a good way to say thank you enough seeing the mud caked on these vehicles.
