Hello OB friends,

I'm a recent member of this great community. I am a second generation aspiring adventurer seeker (son of Alec and Jan Forman www.strangerslikeangels.com) and owner of ExplmoreTM (www.explmore.com). Although I have had a lifetime of travel adventure, growing up in Africa and Europe...I am really a novice when it comes to overlanding. Inspired by my parent's stories and those of modern day adventure the time in my life to get serious about this obsession has finally arrived.

I just celebrated my 30th birthday and am finally getting around to pursuing a dream, to own my very own overland rig. I've got my eye on a LR Disco and can't wait to start kitting it out from stock.

I have looked through the other forum feeds, so I apologies if this has been covered prior, but would love to get your suggestions on best places to find all the kit needed (i.e., tires, jerry cans, roof tents, sealed boxes, etc)? Obviously there are big name stores (REI etc), but maybe there are some smaller mom and pop - really catered to this lifestyle that you can recommend?

Cheers

Charles

Cabelas has a good selection. Rei is good. Sportsmans guide has lots of stuff. several RTT Mfrs come to mind, Tepui, Oz tents, Ezi-Awn, Howling Moon, to mention a few. lots of people use Plano products for storage. More expensive boxes are Pelican. For tires I would recommend your local tire store. Check ARB for portable fridges and Yeti and RTIC for heavy duty Coolers. youll need recovery gear, first aid, food, and lots of other things, to Overland safely. don't forget about CB radios or Ham radios, GPS Maps etc. Peruse the threads for an amodicum of knowledge here. most members here, will be very helpful. you came to the right place. Welcome to the group!

@Charles Forman First of all, welcome to the community!

As to your question, there really isn't a one-stop-shop for all your overlanding needs since there are many different types of rigs with different parts. You will most likely end up seeking out several sources to complete your to-do list. I highly recommend making a priority list for your upcoming build and work it from there. We've recently discussed the topic of modification priority here: http://overlandbound.com/forums/index.php?threads/prioritized-rig-upgrade-list.939/ to help you make your plan.

Where are you located? That will also play a role in determining your sources.

In the event you do decide to go for a Discovery, there are a few of us on the forum (that I've seen so far) that have Disco's of varying degree.

RVA? You are in Richmond, Virginia?

Here are companies that I used to get equipment for my Discovery, or, whom sold other people items that I then got second hand from: Some of these companies offer more than just Land Rover items.

Lucky8 - http://www.lucky8llc.com
Atlantic British - http://www.roverparts.com/?gclid=CJectpXX8csCFYpZhgodXEwCww
Great Basin Rovers Utah - http://gbrutah.com
Columbia Overland - http://www.columbiaoverland.com
Expedition Exchange - https://www.expeditionexchange.com
Rovers North - http://www.roversnorth.com/Land-Rover-Parts/WebHomePage
Voyager Racks - http://www.voyagerracks.com
Tactical4x4 - http://www.tacticalrovers.com
Front Runner - http://www.frontrunneroutfitters.com

If you're in Virginia, I will be passing through in May to get to Upstate New York to move my wife back to her family. I have a Discovery brush guard you could have, should you go that route, I could drop it off to you. (not trying to make you get a discovery in the next month or so, haha!)

I got my snorkel and brass differential plugs from an Australian vendor on Ebay.

I purchased my CB and Ram-X mounts on Amazon.

Plano cases I purchased from Bass Pro.

Tires on my Disco are 265/75r16 BF Goodrich KO2's. As NorthStar96 stated, just hitup a local tire depot.

I'll post again with more, should I remember anything. Hope I helped some.

Thank you @NorthStar96 for the recommendations on some gear and where to shop. Thanks for the welcome as well. :) Your list and @stringtwelve priority list mention are great places to reference. Thank you @stringtwelve !

@Gnasher_PNW - Ryan a Disco will definitely be my choice of rig. A Landy family is in my blood :), so thank you for the great list of resources for kit. Your Disco looks awesome and I just followed you on instagram where I saw your progression.

I am located in Richmond, VA and definitely am up for meeting up when you pass through town.

Thank you again guys. Really appreciate the warm welcome and willingness to answer my question.

Cheers

I appreciate the follows!

And no issue at all, I've got more resources/notes I can send to you as time goes on (I should perhaps add to the forum at some point), on the ownership of a Disco.

May 10th, my adventure begins. I'll send you a PM with my contact information, and will set my route to meet up with you!

The brush guard needs a little TLC, but it's still useful, and I'll let you have it for free (community wellness!).

This is great. I now have an LR4 that I'd like to start outfitting. This was a great read. Thank you...

... a Disco will definitely be my choice of rig. A Landy family is in my blood :),...
I've heard that Penicillin is good for that ! :mask: :mask:
(says the guy that bleeds Toyota red)

All the above is great advice, but let me get my two cents in about REI that you mentioned.
I have a personal boycott policy for this company that does everything to discourage motorized backcountry travel.

My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it...

g'luck and have fun with this. It's taken me 18 years of spending money to get my rig ALMOST where I like it, and to do ALMOST what I want it to do.
