I need some sort of shelter where I can relax and possibly cook, away from mosquitos etc, including when it is raining and/or windy. I am trying to decide between the many options available, and the two main categories I'm looking at are a standalone shelter/ground tent or an awning mounted on my Subaru Forester which includes mesh walls. Any advice? suggestions? things to avoid?

Do you know how well that stands up to rain and wind? I'm concerned that without the option of solid walls I'd get soaked if the rain isn't vertical.

It is a good weather tarp. It holds up to light to moderate rain, but indeed, in heavy rain and wind you will not stay dry.
But question was bug free, not weather proof.
