Backup cameras?

  • HTML tutorial
In the world of overlanding, especially with a heavily-built rig, it's common to have limited visibility out of your rear window. This could be due to a: tire carrier, storage in the back, sleeping platform, or all of the above (plus more). I don't have any storage drawers or anything in the back of my rig yet, but even just having a 33'' tire attached to my bumper pretty much blocks my view. Has anybody went ahead and got a backup camera?

NO Blind spot for me, I see the interior of ALL parts of the FJ quite well. Now if you care what other drivers are doing you can use your mirrors and they are good, if you get into the habit of rotating your head in a clockwise fashion while looking at the mirror (when adjusted properly) it's all good. The most concern I have had while driving anything cool like our rigs IS, OTHER DRIVERS USING PHONES and or so interested in what we are driving they swerve toward you (because we are cool) Usually this can be quickly addressed with a beep on the horn! My horn choice is the stock one in the rt fender area and two Hella super tones behind the front grill, this is definitely an attention getter !......... Also the FJ has a smart transmission and I have read (never done this myself) you can put the auto shift lever into rev at highway speed to view rearward.

Jeeps also have blind spots, i installed lockpics which connects to head unit and unlocks all jk features. I installed cameras on each side mirror activated by turn single. Back up camera and front view so i can see down when front pointed up, love all features
That's cool! Got photos?

I put one in my last pickup truck and I loved it. It was great for backing into a space or hooking up a trailer. My Ramcharger is like a fish bowl so I good with it right now.

This is my next purchase. Comes with 2 cameras. I'll run 1 out back and 1 upfront for adjusting for obstacles. The nice thing is the connections are screw type so no chance of a wire coming loose.

My backup camera is mounted on a tab in the center of the back of the roof rack. I can turn it on from the head unit without being in reverse and boy is that handy when in heavy traffic going through places like Dallas or Denver.

(Don't pay any attention to the crappy wire run, it was a rush job and it is all being rewired this winter).

Driving a Jeep JK with a 35" spare means you have no visibility out the back. I have front and rear cameras and love them. Especially the front while off-roading and peaking hills, let's me see where the drop off is. A good source for after market camera systems is TadiBrothers.com. Huge selection.

Sweet. I will check them out. Do you use the wireless version, or the wired?
Well... I'm not using theirs now, I went with a Kenwood head unit with cameras. However, I did use the TadiBrothers wireless from a brief time and liked them. Setup was very easy too. I also went with the rear view mirror monitor, that didn't work out so well because of glare. If you go with any of the other monitors you should be fine.

Only amateurs look over their shoulders. Good drivers know how to use their mirrors.
This is so true, I rarely look behind me when I back into parking spaces. I see it use though, you can't see directly behind you when your rig is full loaded and you have a spare tire on the back.
