My son plays football for Humboldt State and I try and attend all his home games. The drive is 6.5 hours one way which makes for a long weekend, however at least the school is in one of the most beautiful ares in the state. There are an abundance off road trails and Forest Service roads in the area to explore, however with 13 hours of driving in two days, a footballl game to watch and few hours of sleep it does not leave me much time to explore. I usually will take some short diversions. The Avenue of the Giants is one of my favorites, it is not an off road diversion however once you get off Hwy 101 you feel like you are in another world. I will just find a wide spot in the road, pullover and hike for a couple of miles. It is incredibly beautiful. I highly reccomend taking a little time to exprience it. Because I am 5'10" and weigh 200lbs, I am including a photo my son#64 in the Avenue of the Giants, he is 6'4" 300lbs.

I just drove this a couple of weeks ago, randomly followed the sign off of 101 and ended up spending a few hours exploring in the rain. Pretty incredible place to stumble upon!

I love the Avenue of the Giants. My Wife and I have ridden through it on our motorbikes, it's breathtaking and really puts your place in the world into perspective.

Yes it does, it is amazing the feeling of solitude it gives you.
