For those that have done a lot of overlanding in winter conditions, what in your mind are the most important things to have gear wise? When you were first starting going out in the winter, what were some lessons learned as you were out in it? I am new to overlanding and would like to get out this winter and head out in the mountains in the winter to enjoy the silence of the snow. I figure learning from your own experiences is great, but learning from the experience of others is priceless.

Thanks!

Staying Dry, Warm, and hydrated. Cold weather can suck the moisture out of skin. Having correct footwear, including socks, matters. Having a way to keep water from freezing. Making sure you have recovery & First Aid handy.

Get a good sleeping bag rated for the temps you may encounter. You can increase the thermal efficiency of a bag with a liner added in. When camping in very cold conditions, stoke your "internal furnace" by eating lots of carbs, protein and fats. You'll stay warmer that way, and have the added energy you need for operating in the low temps.
