Hey folks. Obviously new to the forum and new to overlanding in general. Picked up a Jeep a few months ago after a 10 year hiatus without one. Not much into rockcrawling and tearing things up on purpose. Looking more to take my kids camping.

Got a 6 year old girl who is pretty girly and I am sure will hate camping but my twin boys are almost 4 and should love it. They are just about the age where they are fun to be around again so I thought Id give it a shot.

Looking for a small 4x6 or 4x8 trailer to build currently since Jeeps suck for storage. Once I get that I am going to start out slow and hopefully work out to going to Big Bend later this year. Living in Texas it is pretty difficult to find public land so I know I will have a lot of driving ahead of me.

Hello James, welcome from Oklahoma.

You are in the Southwest Region. Check out the Southwest Region sub-forum for local information and involvement opportunities.

Here is the link to the forum calendar and Meet-Up event page: Overland Bound Meetups. Looks like there may be a DFW meet and greet coming up soon:
Or to check out what other members are planning go here: Overland Trip Planning

I am the SW Region Member Rep so if you have any questions let me know.

I am planning on building an Explorer Box trailer. Most people start with a Harbor Freight trailer.

Hey, nice Jeep. I am in the same boat, looking for more storage with a Jeep. I will likely be building a roof rack and then looking into a trailer because I don't have the room in my driveway, but maybe in the next year or so I can find room lol.

I also like the idea of having the trailer loaded all the time so it's ready to go and requires less load time than if I was loading up the back of the Jeep.
Load food, clothes/toiletries, hitch up and go.

Thanks guys.
Prerunner1982, I have looked at the Harbor Freight and that may be an option that I go with. If I am a little patient though I am hoping to find a used 4x8 with a 3500 pound axle for just a bit more. I've got my eyes peeled.

Exactly. Being able to load it up slowly over the course of the week instead of having to get it all done right before you head out.

Hey James, I’m also new to OB and came across your post when I searched the forums for “DFW”. Like you, I’m not really into rock crawling, but rather enjoy dispersed camping and hiking with my kids. I agree it can be difficult to find large areas of public land near DFW. My family of 4 went to Big Bend 3 years ago and it was amazing. In the meantime, you may consider visiting Ouachita National Forest, which can be reached in about 3 hours driving from the DFW area. I took my daughter to Ouachita NF in Arkansas back in August and she enjoyed it. Some trails/forest roads had a fair amount of people, yet there were others we drove and didn’t see anyone for a few miles. ONF also extends into Eastern Oklahoma as well; however, I have seen some posts indicating confusion over which OK trails are on public land and which trails are on private property.

Best of luck on your search for the right trailer for your project.
