Aftermarket Bumper Costs: Front vs Rear $$$

I'm in the market for an aftermarket rear bumper because I will eventually add a rooftop rack to my JK and most won't work with the OEM bumper when wanting to mount to the frame instead of the body.

I already added a full-width steel bumper to the front which was for the recovery points and winch mount. It was a $450 bumper, and one that I found to be on the high end of the pricing spectrum compared to most options.

What I don't understand is, why rear bumpers - most of which don't support water/fuel storage, winch mounting, departure armor, etc. are nearly twice as much as some of the best front bumpers. That's before we even bring tire carriers into the discussion, which typically push the price well over a grand.

Are there added costs for material or design when talking rear vs front? I feel like I might be able to get one fabricated to my specs for less than $1000. These prices seem astronomical and don't make much sense to me. Are there any manufacturers reading this that can shed some light?

I don’t have a Jeep so I can’t help with the costs of front and rear for that. But I did just order a Smittybilt for front and rear for my fJ. 1. Because I’m OCD and then Ben front and rear have to match. 2. Because with the Black Friday sale I saved $400 of I ordered both together.

But I did in the process notice that the front and rear were about the same price. Not sure why when all of the work has to be done to the front so that the winch can be installed. Back is just a piece of metal that does nothing. I’m with you. I don’t understand it either.

LOL, count yourself lucky with that Jeep aftermarket. You probably have the most choices at the cheapest prices along the entire spectrum of quality. I'd keep looking if I were you. I bet you find exactly what you are looking for eventually.

My wallet feels emptier just thinking about a LR build. I do consider myself somewhat "lucky" about my selection, but it also requires hours and hours of research as well as tons of trial and error when buying stuff from Chieeeena. That's not just true to parts, but pretty much anything you buy.

Which bumpers are you looking at? I am fairly limited for bumpers on my WJ, but I'm not all that concerned as I don't like the look them. It'll hinder clearance and my approach angle, but my lift height does that already.

My favorite choice after a bunch of research that's close to my budget is this one: https://www.quadratec.com/products/12249_200X_PG.htm?gclid=CjwKCAiA9f7QBRBpEiwApLGUitI6TGhKeoZPZfPNhOu9lK6ZIwGrBGEoRVhPBF0UTOpIfizTfZQi_hoC7b0QAvD_BwE

As far as rear bumpers with tire carriers, the cheapest I could find was $525 made by Barricade (still more expensive than my front bumper which has a winch and recover points, full length) and go as high as $2000 with most hovering around $1000.

Without a tire carrier, which means I can't run anything over 33" on my Jeep's stock carrier and don't get the extra storage, still $400 and up.

I think I'll just suck it up and get the one I linked to above. As of this post, is seems a lot of bumpers without tire carriers are pretty reasonably priced - albeit useless when running larger tires.

Quadratec has this one on sale. A little better priced than the one you posted about, however you would need to fab up or bolt on something like this to be able to have the storage similar to the rotopax and hi-lift mounts.

Yeah, they show the tire carrier in the photo but it's not included. Smittybilt bolt-on tire carrier alone is $600! I'm not in a huge rush as I won't need these until Spring when I'm going on a 6-week expedition. Just gonna keep checking CL and FB Market for deals and if nothing else pops up I'm gonna go with the linked one above. Thanks for looking around for me!

If you select with the tire carrier option from the drop-down, it's only $525.
