Stumbled across the site and have already learned things. Glad to be here. I do plan on becoming a member. I am a map maker, ESRI GIS. I have been overland, remote, solo adventuring for 30 years. Up until now it all looked like this.

BMW GSs, KTM 990, Africa Twin and others.

I fell solo in Death Valley last year. I have fallen a lot over the years but this time was bad. I am OK and made it out myself, but it wasn’t fun like it use to be. So I started building up this Crosstrek. I’ve had 3 Jeep’s, 2 Cherokee’s a Path Finder, ex terra, and a Ford F-250. This car is perfect for me and solo remote travel. It’s built up to be long range, reliable and self contained. I’ll find the right forum and post up the mods. It’s not your typical Crosstrek build. Engine mods are tasty.

Leaving next winter on a multi-month USA road trip. Have some shake downs planned for the summer. Will post them up in the travel forums. Look forward to meeting some of you and learning new stuff. Mapmaker.

Welcome to OB Boykin! I too am in the mapmaking industry and use ESRI software (I’m a GIS analyst for a local midstream gas company).

Welcome Boykin from a SoCal transplant in Europe. I do miss Death Valley. But only a little. On your solo trips do you carry a PLB?

Safe travels,

Rick

Hi Boykin,

Welcome to Overland Bound!

I can understand the move from dual sport bike to 4x4 well, because I have lived through this evolution myself years ago.

Greetings from across the pond

Hi and welcome! I am also a ADV rider ( 1200GS and Ducati Enduro Multistrada + others ) I mean they are small right and you can pack them really tightly together in the garage!
Your rig looks well put together and capable! Looking forward to hearing about your adventures!

Former BMW moto guy here. Welcome to OB! I'm digging your Crosstrek and have been trying to convince my wife that one of these needs to be our next vehicle. Definitely keep us posted as you press it into service!

Thanks for the welcome. For the questions: @NotGumby, have carried a Spot rescue with the extraction insurance for years. Great for letting your folks know where you are and I’ve never had to use the SOS, yet… @Vicking1204, didn’t build it for horse power, built it to better utilize the power it has and be a reliable high mileage vehicle. Three things so far, bracing the chassis and engine/ trans, opening air intake / manifold spacers / exhaust, air oil separators on both crank vents. Next a rear strut brace and oil cooler. Off idle acceleration is the noticeable difference. I’ll ping you when I start a build thread for details. And for my new ADV friends, I am in the hunt for a CRF 300L. Only I’ll be pulling it behind the Crosstrek from now on.

We are on the same trajectory, what is the biggest off-roady motored bike I can take with me!
For me with the T4R I would need to go with a hitch carrier, so I settled on one of these electric dirt bikes, with the hitch carrier I am under 400lbs, so good to go!
Looks a little urban mod, but has all the goodies I was looking for
