So, I love my Tacoma. 225k, manual, 3.4 V6 Xtra Cab, with a bed rack with all my stuff mounted to it, RTT, and currently stock suspension, though I have a 3" OME/Bilstein combo waiting to go on. I've done a few expeditions with the Tacoma and drive it daily, and have had no issues other than a section of frame rust that I've found this morning, which I will be having patched shortly. Other than that, it has been nothing but good to me, and I would drive it just about anywhere. My issue is the layout it has to offer.

However, I've been eyeballing an FJ60 that I've considered trading for. It's an 84 with a 2" OME lift, 33" BFGs, a steel bumper, and is also a manual. Before my Tacoma, I had an 80 series with 35s, but the reason I got rid of it was because of the 35s, with steel bumpers, sliders, steel roof rack, and tire carrier with another 35 on it, it was all too much for the little 3FE with stock 4.11 gears, and 5.29s were far too expensive with labor.

My dilemma is that I'm not sure what to do here. The 60 has some body rust here and there but is otherwise solid, has a clean and much more spacious interior (mine is clean, but we know how small those back "seats" are), and now that I have an RTT, I can have sleeping arrangements on the top, and with the addition of a roof-length rack, would then have additional storage up top, as well as inner, more secure storage, with the addition of a homemade drawer system. I had a drawer system in the 80, but it was also a sleeping base as I didn't have my RTT, which meant less storage.

My question is, does anyone here have experience using a 60 series as both a daily and an exploration rig? What are the pros and cons that you saw? Where there any major issues that would stop you from considering owning another one?

Get the FJ60. Worth it IMO. Always good to have another rig, especially this one. If I could ever get my hands on a FJ60, I would! I'm a Jeep guy through and through, but the 60 is such a sweet rig.

Will this be your primary vehicle?

It would come down to what my daily drive is and who else I'm transporting (kids primarily). FJ60's are on leafs front and rear and, to state the obvious, every nut and bolt is going to be 30 years old. I daily my 80 but only because it has abs and airbags and I don't want to put miles on my 4Runner.

I think if I was looking at a replacement rig with interior space I'd probably be considering the 100's/LX470's. Modern conveniences and safety, demonstrably reliable, v8, easy to lift onto 35's, and quite a bit newer. That's looking on paper though, you have to have a connection with what you drive. I'd love a 60 but I've already got one project in the garage to finish.

We have had our 60 for 29 years and each time it has an issue, we upgrade it, and now we have a very capable off road rig. Although it how has 200K on it, it has all been refurbished.
So ARB rear, limited slip front, Thomas air compressor for air horn ARB and airing up, lifted, 33s on aluminum rims, 8K winch, platform in lieu of rear seat for storage and our dogs, 12 volt fridge, two 10 gallon water containers, Toyota 5 speed, 4.56 gears, PIAA "beeg" lights with integrated fog lights, dual batteries with controller, NO rust, and likely more.

We LOVE our 60 and it gets rave reviews everywhere we go.

SO buy a newer vehicle and complete the "cost" cycle when you sell it, OR put that same money into a 60 to keep it up, and still have a 60!

YMMV, but that works for us :-)
