The one that stands out for me is; in 1996 my daughter and I went for a 2 week car trip, Bodie, Virginia City, up to The Black Rock Desert and High Rock Canyon. Fly geyser ect. I drove over the Sierras and we visited Bodie then headed N on 395 and found a Campground some 20 miles N. of Bridgeport. That's when we found out we left the tent at home......
I knew there was a sporting goods store in Bridgeport so we went back and bought the only tent they had. It's floor was 5'4" x5'4", I am 5'10", not a good night s sleep for me, daughter slept fine.
Next day on the way to Virginia City stopped at a Kmart and bought a bigger tent.

But wait there's more!

We eventually drove up to the Black Rock and set up a base camp, from there we went to High Rock one day and Leadville the next. Coming back from Leadville only to find the wind had picked up the tent and broken the spine support. It was full of gear and not staked down so I figured it was OK. I ALWAYS stake down my tents now. I had a bit of steel tubing which fit the spine and was able to effect a repair, that tent lasted many years after.
