Welcome To Overland BoundI guess I am a new "old member" here. When this forum just started I became a member (#64), however ignored it for a while then revisited maybe +/- 6 months later and was INSTANTLY put off by the "pay to play" motif.
So now years later I checked out this site again, AND totally "get" what the original builders of this site had/ have in mind. I applaud you guys!
I've been into motorized vehicle overlanding since I took off for South America in a 109 IIA Landrover in 1975 ( I was 17). I never made it to South America because of a head-on collision with a logging truck WAAAY out on the Nicoya peninsula (Costa Rica). Thankfully no one was hurt, except for the Landrover, and I was able to get her driving again with the help of a local welder.
The next 5+ years I was all over Central America and was lucky to be some of the first "surf explorers" to pioneer what are now world famous breaks.
When I came home in the early 80's and settled down enough to start a business, I was only able to spend long weekends and holidays adventuring so I "reequipped" with Ford vans (bought used in good shape, beat to sh*t, and resold) and aimed for Northern Baja. Not so much for surf but mostly for pioneering several HARDCORE Mt. bike trails. We eventually had a killer loop between 5 hidden hot springs!
Then in the early 90's I moved my business from Santa Ana up to the Central Coast ( I am right behind the Oceano Dunes) and what spare time I had was spent getting taught the "secret" trails in SLO County and Big Sur by the local "Bro's".
Then in 1996, I had the opportunity to buy the truck that I eventually would turn into Casa Azul. She is a 1984 Ford F700 that was converted to 4 wheel drive by Pathfinder and was intended to be sold to the CIA, NSA, DoD (I never got a "straight" answer). I bought the truck with 212 miles on it after it being delivered to me from LA!!!
Since then I've had ALL KINDS of fun adventures (mostly in Baja), either solo adventure in Mayhual (my Jeep Scrambler) or with my girl and our pup's in Casa Azul or both rigs combined!

just say when!Well gosh Grub,
I may have to take you up on that! That is a part of the world that I've been VERY curious to see!
There are a lot of reasons:
- One of my favorite authors is James Lee Burke.
- I was a member of a Marti Gras Krewe in San Luis Obispo, CA from 1994 until the LEOS shut it down 2006 (I just have to ask... What self respecting cop doesn't want overtime and a half while watching hoards of collage age girls flash them their tits!?!?!). So needless to say I can visit with beads and coins!
- A dear old friend of my sweeties and mine was a bartender (& thug) in the French Quarter for 20+ years
- And a client has a facilities in Vinton that I helped develop devices for laser welding serious sh*t in to capsules to be used for things I can't talk about (aka: excuse to write off the trip)!
- Oh, and of course there is always the food!
