The Lost Coast Of CA- Feb 19-21st, 2021*

The Lost Coast of California is a gorgeous part of our coast up north. It’s a long stretch of miles where I5 heads up the middle of the state, where Hwy 1 joins 101 veering inland, and a rugged portion of the coast is left pristine and untouched. Hikers truly get the best experience of the Lost Coast trail, but we can get a small sample disperse camping at Usal Beach. We will tour Avenue of the Giants where the tallest trees on earth grow, and disperse camp on the banks of the Klamath River. Bring your water boots (snow boots will work too) to walk up the slot canyon creek covered in ferns called Fern Canyon. This is a road trip/overland trip combo and it is stunning.

*if COVID guidelines conflict we will postpone to March 19-21st, 2021. Please read the entire description under the Rally Point Notes section.

Please read the ENTIRE Rally Point as we expect to have a large group, having everyone on the same page will help the trip go smoothly. The Rally Point Notes section details the trip and please download the GAIA GPS maps file for your navigation. HAM will be our communication format and if you don’t have a license yet you can still listen in. A portable HAM unit is relatively affordable but try to get a longer antenna as it will help you hear better.

It’s gonna be fun!

IMPORTANT

Here is the GAIA GPS file to download and import into Gaia. It will show you the tracks, waypoints, and our campsite locations. While our plan is to travel as a group it is your responsibility to know where you are going.

Click on the locations link then scroll down to the GPX icon. From there if you have an iOS device download and open it. It will look like garbled info, then click to open it in Gaia GPS and it should look great.

From previous experience, trailers are NOT allowed (this applies to all types of trailers, not just long RV trailers). You will need to drop your trailer at the Elk Meadow Picnic Area (at the entrance to the road to Fern Canyon) or ride with someone.

Yes thank you Chris, trailers can’t go all the way into Fern Canyon, but you can park it in the lot at the entrance of the road.

Thank you, Dave. It seems the download GPX function is not available if you come in through the OB app. It is if you go in with a regular browser. But, it seems the file is blank (0 bytes)...

Awesome trip, thanks for organizing! When I try to download the gpx file it downloads an empty file (Zero bytes)?

Quick question, how long will be at usal beach? Wondering if I have time to get some lines wet.

We “should” arrive about 2-3pm Friday and then we will head out about 8:30am the next morning.
