I had no idea the clearance was that tight, wow! I'd be talking to the suspension guys Carli, Camburg and such.

Having spent plenty of money on autos over time, I never seem to get it back, so now it's for function. I roll with kayaks, surfboards, mountain bike and toys in general so the top of the rig is set up for toys and fuels. I have been pulled over plenty of times in Baja for looking like a rich gringo. LOL. Everything is a compromise with kitting out your rig.

It looks like the stock 22" tire size was 275/50R22 which is roughly a 32.8x10.8-22" tire. As such, a 33x10.5-17 or 18" would fit and is a pretty decent sized tire. Earlier you mentioned you put a "315" on yours, but what was the aspect ratio and rim size? 315 in and of itself doesn't define a tire size.

Yep, that was the original stock tire. When I got rid of the 22in rims and bought 17s, I put the BF Goodrich all terrain K02 tire, 265 70 R17. I was told that biggest I can go without rubbing.

Interesting because that's only about a 31.7" vs. the stock 32.8"... of course that might buy you the space for chains if needed. Width is obv very close, being just 10mm narrower, the 275 in the stock size and 265 in your new size is the section-width (not tread width) in mm.

I was considering chains for some property I had that was 9 miles into the wilderness without plowed roads, but i've decided against that. I was confused by the change in size and questioned it.... i don't recall what they said though.

Just wanted to update those who helped me in this thread.... after much thought, and changing my mind about 1000 times, I decided to trade the diesel in and get a 2021 Tacoma TRD Offroad, used with 11k miles on it. I could have got a black new one that was in transit, but I just couldn't give up the color on the used one.... I just loved the color (Cement Grey.) I also got it in a manual which I've been wanting for a long time now. Very excited to build this out! Thanks again everyone for your help.
