So, here we go!

Really, truly, admire this community and cannot wait to meet all the like minded people in this group!

Acquired my rig in 2010 and made a few mods here and there. Nothing major - wheels, tires, blah, blah blah.... Fast forward to Chirstmas 2016 - I've changed careers, bought a house, got married and still own the 4runner. My wife has always known that I wanted to build my rig for overlanding and decided to pull the trigger, for me, and puchased a 3" lift as a gift. Needless to say, I have the bug again, after a 5 year hiatus!

The Bebop

Did you build your storage or buy it, and where did you get the brake kit? Thanks! Awesome rig! I'm hoping to buy an 01 SR5 tomorrow

Hey thank you! Built the box over 6 years ago. One of the first things I did when I bought my runner! 99% of the materials were purchased at the home depot. The latch was some hardware site. Cant remember. I'd be happy to send more pics of the platform if youre interested. The brake kit was purchased through Amazon. Callahan Brake Parts - red calipers with the slotted rotors. Not a bad price, didn't want to individually hunt for every part. Brakes great now with no wobble! The only complaint I have with the brake upgrade is that I have a "spongy" peddle now. Bled multiple times. Thinking I'm gonna upgrade the lines to extended steel and give the drum brakes a solid run through before I do anything drastic. The 01-02's have a different master cylinder that incorporates the abs into the unit, making it stupid expensive to replace. Ah well, gotta do what you gotta do. Good luck on your 4Runner hunt!

I love the clean look of this rig and the storage/sleeping set up is exactly what I envisioned for mine (when I decide on one...still searching for the right one for now!)
Keep up the great work!

Thank you! Take your time and you'll find it! I had three slip 4Runners through my fingers before I got my current rig. All in due time!

@Rebel Browncoat. How do you like the 4wd in the 02? I have a 2000 but my girlfriend is looking at a really clean 02. And I just like the mechanical diff over the push button in the 01-02’s.

It isn't necessarily a tough question to answer. It's just that this is the only 4wd I've been exposed to. I like it, I'm just realizing that depending on how hard I may wheel in the future, I may want to invest in, at least, a rear locker. Push button is great! Can't complain for the time being. Gets me to alot of places safely and quite convenient.

Awesome glad to hear it works for you. I just try to stay away from as much electronics as I can. Less to go wrong. But that gives me some more confidence. Thank you

How are the 891’s in the rear? I’ve been looking at running the 881/890 setup with Bilstein 5100’s. I’ve seen a lot of people complain about the 890’s stiffness and was wondering how stiff the 891’s were
You know, it was the old, tired stock suspension before I "upgraded". I'm happy with it, but understand why people would complain about it. The ride can be pretty rough, especially if you don't have the extra weight in the rear. I removed my cargo/sleeping platform, to deep clean it, and rode around for a week without the weight and hated it. With my platform in the back with all my gear, it's pretty nice. This is how I ride all the time. I just just don't have anything to compare it with. It'd be nice if I could ride with someone who has a comparable set-up. Hope this helps! Let me know if you want more details.
