My son-in-law stopped by yesterday to look at the trailer build. (We social distanced!). The thought is we might build a “slide in” teardrop insert. In this way we still have a utility trailer AND a camping trailer.......we would use fiberglass/ structural foam building technic to keep it extremely light.......yup, another project!

Today I got the top rails installed. I decided to use 3" X 3" X 3/16 Angle, mitered at the corners and welded top the uprights.....Love it!

That looks really neat, my OCD would have me moving the axle closer to the center. I have a similar axle under my camper trailer and it works well although it needs shocks to stop it from bouncing offroad and shaking the contents up.

I hear ya....I was concerned too. Although it would have been quite easy to move the axle. I did some testing first. The trailer, unloaded tracks and rides beautifully on the torsion axle. So I filled a 45g and a 30g water tank along with a bunch of lead bars on the trailer and took it for a ride. (About 1000# plus the 700# of the trailer) It tracked and rode fantastic. No drama what so ever. And with the longer axle to ball dimension it is wonderful to back up. I'm hauling it with a 2500 series truck with 3300# payload and class 5 receiver. So tongue weight will never be an issue.

This trailer only has about a 1700# payload rating as the axle is #2500 and the new tires are 1800# each. I'm never going to put more than that in it. My tractor is 800# and implements add another 500#....

I should be good to go......

Plus, if I need to haul anything heavier....A dual axle, fatbed trailer would be fun to build!

Nice job, I'd suggest something to gusset, triangulate the rear vertical posts.

Thanks, I’ll look into that. But at 1.25 x 4, welded all the way around, they aren’t moving.
