    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

Been working on sound insulation. A friend recommended this material to the sides of the rig. It’s expensive so hope it works. Very easy to install.

Finally got the shocks. Tried to get a set of Icon shocks, but they were horrible in customer service. Never returned my calls with information and finally gave up. I'll need to fabricate a custom bracket for the bottom front.

Building a home in a 80 series Landcruiser

Spent the weekend in the Mojave working with Overland Bound and NPS documenting hiking trails for damage and signs. This was all amazingly organized by @Kent R and @Narbob. Love that desert. Now with the main LRA tank I can get almost 800 miles of range. Did almost 2000 miles this weekend...

    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

Today I got from my friend Marti the welder the 32 gallon water tank that will sit under the car instead of the spare. There is a loop of 1/2" stainless pipe to allow 190F hot coolant from the diesel hearer in freezing weather to protect the tank. The hot water has a water-to-water heat...

Building a home in a 80 series Landcruiser

Heat exchanger in place. Had to modify the location because of the tank. note driveshaft is out to help the installation. Tomorrow tank goes in. (I hope!). Monday headed to AZ and next weekend the Mojave Trail Guardian organized by OB and NPS.

Building a home in a 80 series Landcruiser

Upgrading the rig for a Long Range America (LRA) 37 gallon main tank. It will give us over 800 miles range. I will never fill diesel in CA. not sure why Long Range America. it’s actually built in Australia. Had to pull the hot water heat exchanger and modify the plumbing a bit. Waiting for...

Building a home in a 80 series Landcruiser

Finally got the 37 gallon tank. Took awhile to pull the stock tank off. Since the Long Range America (LRA) tank is deeper, installation instructions are to ‘butcher’ the sender unit wiring and arm and solder parts that they provide. I figured LRA should just provide a single bracket that...

    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

Hey Michael, I am familiar with this 1Hx engine family. We have an 80 series, and a 40 series that were converted from gas to 1HDFT and 1HDT, and a 60 series that has the 15BFT 4 cylinder 16 valve 4.1L that came from a Toyota bus in Honk Kong. I'm all diesel. If interested to stop by, I'm in...

    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

Hey Michael, Yes I agree. I’ve been working with a shop in Portland that are experts in these Denso pumps. They rebuilt 3 of the IPs I have and are experts and reliable. There is only small issue is that it’s costly. But then again, when you walk to a Ferrari shop, you ask when can I get...

    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

While injectors and IP are being rebuilt, I’m prepping the engine for Bottom End Bearings replacement. It’s so much easier when engine is on the bench avoiding a black oil shower.

The 1HDFT is the next gen after the 1HDT. it is a slightly better design. Runs cooler, smoother and a bit quieter. It’s the last all mechanical diesel 6 cyl Toyota ever built. One wire runs the engine cutting fuel to the injector pump. It’s considered the ‘holy grail’. I have the same...

    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

Got the engine that I really wanted. The 1HDFT 24 Valve direct injection Toyota. I'll baseline it, and swap after driving the rig for 500 miles. Probably sell the 1HDT that is installed currently.

Choose my engine - Disco 1

Best engine in my opinion is the Toyota 1KD for your application. I have heard bad stories about the R2.8. Remember it’s made in China. Parts are hard to get. The 1KD will last you a few 100 thousand miles and are not expensive on eBay. They are brought from Japan with low miles. I have 4...

    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

Big day today. AluCab mounted. Since the body never had the roof installed (and cut) and was deformed, we spent 2 hours trying to fit it, grinding a bit the bottom, and slightly bending to widen the roof. It was stress initially but at the end I'm satisfied. Could not have done it with out help...
