    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

The 1HDFT is the next gen after the 1HDT. it is a slightly better design. Runs cooler, smoother and a bit quieter. It’s the last all mechanical diesel 6 cyl Toyota ever built. One wire runs the engine cutting fuel to the injector pump. It’s considered the ‘holy grail’. I have the same...

    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

Got the engine that I really wanted. The 1HDFT 24 Valve direct injection Toyota. I'll baseline it, and swap after driving the rig for 500 miles. Probably sell the 1HDT that is installed currently.

Choose my engine - Disco 1

Best engine in my opinion is the Toyota 1KD for your application. I have heard bad stories about the R2.8. Remember it’s made in China. Parts are hard to get. The 1KD will last you a few 100 thousand miles and are not expensive on eBay. They are brought from Japan with low miles. I have 4...

    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

Big day today. AluCab mounted. Since the body never had the roof installed (and cut) and was deformed, we spent 2 hours trying to fit it, grinding a bit the bottom, and slightly bending to widen the roof. It was stress initially but at the end I'm satisfied. Could not have done it with out help...

    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

AluCab sitting on the roof on 2x6s and maybe this weekend get installed. New OEM glass and weatherstrip installed today. Got the hooks for the tracks on the roof. They were too thick to fit so I had to grind them a bit. Are there different sizes? Checked with AluCab and I can lift from...

Building a home in a 80 series Landcruiser

Ordered a 37 gal main fuel tank LRA to replace the stock 25 gal. This would give us 800 miles range. I will fill gas always outside CA so instead of paying $6/gal, I can get it for $3.50. Figured in a couple of years it would pay for the price of the tank. ‍♂️

Electrical slowly integrated. Lights, starter, wipers etc all working. Installed the BMW M5 manual heated seats and got the AluCab popup roof to the shop. Will install in the next few days including all the glass.

    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

OK. A bit more progress. A dear friend gave me 4 rims (I think Africa specs) and 295/75R16 KO2 were installed. Looks/price is infinite. AC lines are done. All electrical for the AC is done with OEM parts (except the AC switch). Intercooler had to be chopped again on top so the hood will not...

    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

Struggled for two days to line up te front fender. Had to use spacers. Apparently the rig that come from South America are warped. ‍Seems like finally the troopy is smiling. Also got a set of OEM wheels that came from a 79 series (landcruiser pickup). They are ‘run flat’ so have a heavy...

    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

Trying to source some electrical harnesses for the AC, as well as some fittings. A friend machined the nuts for the evaporator fitting in the firewall. Also replaced the U bolts and brackets on the rear springs that give 1" of clearance and protects the U bolts. Two photos compare the OEM vs...

Building a home in a 80 series Landcruiser

Truck has done 90K miles since the diesel conversion 5 years ago. Just love the way it drives. This weekend I drove to Flagstaff for Expo. You put it in 5th gear at 65-70 mph in cruise control and it does not care uphill, down hill and it maintains the same speed. EGT never exceeds 870F.

Where are you sending the IP and injectors? I’ve dealt with a place in Portland on my engines. 2 1HDT and one 1HDFT. Just bought another 1HDFT that will be taken care there. Truck looking great.

    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

Hey Jim, thanks. Tali will have input once the body is driving and we start the build in the back. I figured when all said and done it will cost as much as a brand new Bronco or Jeep. But, I need to keep busy, otherwise probably be robbing banks (for excitement!). today I finished making...

    1988 HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy build

This weekend I spent doing little things. I’ll change some connectors to Deutsch. I’m missing the mating connectors to some harnesses and have unlimited supply of all Deutsch products. Also a $1500 crimper that kept after a project ended. I can’t find the two hoses that come out of the...
